Sanitation For Plant Disease Practice Of Rigid Sanitation Will Prevent Spread Of Tobacco Plant Disease That Robs Farmers Annually Rigid sanitation will aid farmers in checking the spread of tobacco mosaic, disease thqt costs North Carolina farmers millions of dollars every year. The organisms that cause mosaic are often found in tobacco that has been prepared for smoking or chewing, and they can be transferred easily to young plants in the field or seed bed. "Don't carry any tobacco in your pockets when you go into a field or seed bed," said Dr. Luther Shaw, extension plant pathologist at State College. "If you are a tobacco user, brush out your pockets and wash your hands thoroughly with soap rnd water." Dr. Shaw also urged growers lot to transplant any plants that show symptoms of mosaic. For the first four to six weeks after transplanting, the field should be jone over before each cultivation rnd all diseased plants removed rnd destroyed, he says. Cultivators, harness, men's ?hoes, and other equipment may snread mosaic over the field. Al ,vays cultivate or top healthy slants before working with those ;hat have mosaic symptoms. Dr. Shaw pointed out that jlack can also be spread by vorkstock, equipment, or men noving from one field to an)ther, especially when the soil is vet. Black shank can also be spread by rain water washing rom a diseased field on to an>ther just below. On farms where black shank las been found, don't use tobac:o trash in fertilizer, and don't lse manure from the stalls of inimals that have ranged on in-' 'ested ground. More than 3,500 blood-tested >aby chicks were purchased in Tones county this spring as a esult of demonstrations by the1 issistant county agent. Says That Brick Brooder ^'g, Gives Better Results Than Hen Or Turkey j |ex( "A brick brooder has it all over: a turkey or chicken hen in rais-! ^a< ing poults," said C. F. Ida; A hen can dc used successfully !'3 1 in small flocks, he added, but un- [ter ! less great care is exercised, the1 ali' ! losses will be heavy. Wi Either way, he continued, the me i young turkeys should not be al! lowed to range on ground with older birds or where adult turkeys or chickens ranged the year ? before. Where a brick brooder and a l i brooder house are used, both of should be cleaned thoroughly and fo. moved to a new location not used by poultry or turkeys duping gJr the past two years. I5S> The brooder should be operated, J,"" 'in about the same manner as for'ma i chicks. Nor ed Raleigh.?There are thousands nj,,', of North Carolinians who will be J ere I eligible for aid under provisions of the Old Age Assistance Act passed by the 1937 General As- ,\ViT sembly, and there are many more vv.i ' who will not be able to meet the JYl'i requirements for various reasons, thei The State Board of Charities; and Public Welfare, anxious to1 wit! make clear provisions of the Old J?eo Age Assistance plan, which be- the comes effective on July 1, of this J?, 1 i year, has issued a statement Sam tending to clarify the Act. JJ. One of the first requirements i-oi-d is that applicants for aid under '"JJ1 the plan shall be citizens of the Apri United States, either native-born c f or naturalized. Another essential ?? is that applicants shall be 6!5 ... years of age or over, and shall 0f nnt have sufficient income. or trus other resources, to provide a rea-j sonable subsistance compatible I "? " with decency and health. |^"s Many persons reaching the age hish of 65 have not been able, fre- u' quently tlirough 110 fault of their own, to save sufficient money to J,, | care for themselves in the declin- C'ri-i ing years of their lives; others, 'T',V| because of age or disabilities, are lira 1 unable to earn a comfortable {? J livelihood, while still others are nolo not so situated that they can care for themselves. n?cr Applicants for assistance under J!le the Act are not supposed to be ' r>i inmates of any public institution at the time applications are filed, c. 1 However, they may apply for aid ? which, if allowed, will not begin j rj until they have ceased to be inmates of public institutions. c,l" 1 In order to prevent possible fraudulent applications for assis- s"{J| tance under the Old Age plan, <!?-? the law specifically prohibits the ,he assignment or transfer of prop- Bi erty during the two years prior to the filing of applications. tree Another requirement which will be rigidly adhered to is that all to 1 applicants must have been residents of North Carolina for at bran least five of the nine years pre- ^.(i' ceding the filing of the applica- meai tions, and for one year immedia-1 tely preceding the filing. j ? There is an additional stipula- j 4 ? tion, in view of the fact that the 100 counties of the State arej participating in the financial as-, pects of the Act, that applicants j must have been residents of the 1 county in which the applications j are filed for at least one year. _ This, however, in cases where j county residence has been of j ? shorter duration, has been cared for by a clause in the law which provides that approved applicants shall receive full benefits, with the difference which would have been absorbed by the county coming from the State appropriation. Instances of this character will be passed upon by the State Board. Amounts to be paid applicants will be determined upon individual conditions, and will not ex- 1 ceed $30 per month, or $360 per 9 I LOT, SOUTHPORT. N. C. ir.
