WACCAMAW SCHOOL NEWS By DELENA DUVAL Literary Society The Sappho Literay Society met Friday, February 10th, and the following debate was discussed: Resolved: "That poverty is a greater obstacle to social progress than ignorance." The affirmative was upheld by Lena May Russ and Charlie Formy Duval and the negative by Atlas Simmons and J. B. Ward, Jr. The negative won. Basketball The boys' and girls' basketball teams were defeated by Leland high school Friday night, Februnrv 10. However, the team was ? > reported to have done some very good playing. The team is still optimistic. Electric Power The people of Waccamaw community met at Waccamaw high school Thursday night. February 9th to discuss the lightin proposition of the Anson Mutual Electric Corporation. A large nember of people showed much interest and they are hoping that it won't be long before it will be in service. 4-H Meet The 4-H Club girls of Waccamaw high school met with Mrs. Marion S. Dosher Thursday, February 9, at which time they discussed ,the care of "A Bed Room." Miss Catherine Hayes, a member of our faculty, spent the week-end at her home in Mullins, S. C. LELAND School News Chapel Program The 8th grade had charge of chapel program Tuesday. The program was pertaining to Valentine day. Some of the members of the class sang songs and were accompanied by Wilber Tilman. Curtis Sullivan and Billie Peters on the guitar and harmonica. Basketball The basketball season is about to come to a close. Leland is very proud of her showing. The boys' team won the county championship and Leland girls have made a creditable showing, having won third place in the county. Debating , The debater's elimination contest will take place Monday night, Feb. 20th, at 7 o'clock. About 8 debaters are taking part in this 'ILOT, SOUTHPORT, N. C. contest. Four will be elected by f the members of the faculty to: ! represent the school in the coun-j ty contest. Declamation The boys and girls are beginning to think about the declama-1 j tion contest. We regret losing Leroy Skipper, but we feel sure that Paul will make a good driver. Improvements We have received brand new < shades for our school. These shades improve the looks of the school.
