Sentelle Freed
On Charges Of
Drunk Driving
1
R. E. Sentelle, prominent
Southport attorney and former
Brunswick county Representative
to the lower house
of the North Carolina General
Assembly, was acquitted yesterday
in Gastonia municipal ,
court on charges of drunken 1
driving.
Sentelle admitted he had
been drinking liquor as he
rode along but said he wasn't
"under the influence". He said
the liquor helped a bronchial
condition with which he was
suffering, and said he also
had been taking "strong
medicines" to relieve his
bronchitis.
Policeman H. R. Prather
found three full pints in Sentelle's
car beside the broken
pint. Sentelle said he was
taking two pints to his wife,
an invalid for whom liquor is
constantly prescribed, and |
was using the other for medicinal
purposes for himself.
This was the third time
within recent months that
the local man has been arrested
on a similar count.
Two years ago he was convicted
in Montgomery county.
Earlv this vear he was ar
rested in Mecklenburg county,
and trial of this case is
still pending according to a
recent report in a Charlotte
newspaper.

Last Group Of

Only Four Plnnes Will Be

Friday
LANDING NEAR
GARRISON PLANNED
Request Had Been Made
For Demonstration Of
Air Tactics Sunday,
But Planes Will
Have Departed
A group of naval planes, in
routine training here since the
first of last week, flew in formation
over Southport this morning
at nine o'clock. They left
soon afterwards for Norfolk to
make room for another group
which arrived this afternoon.
The group which arrive^ this
afternoon consisted of mly four
planes, the smallest number here
at any time during the training I j
peri 3d. This group which arrived1!
today will stage a short demon- .
stration at about 11 o'clock ,
Thursday morning. In this demonstration
one of the planes will '
land and take off in the vicinity
of the engineers dock.
The schedule of operations requirts
that the last group of
planes return to Norfolk Friday .
morning. The U. S. S. Thrush will i I
also depart at the same time.
Although there has been much |
bad weather the present training!
period at Southport has apparent-,
ly been all that could have been
desired. A naval plane, as a
rule, does not await the weather
man. The machines have been
taking everything in stride.
Southport citizens have become
well acquainted with the officers
and crew of the tender. They
have had shore leave daily when
their tasks of servicing the planes
were finished. With their groups
being here from only one to
three days, the officers and men
on the planes have not had so
many opportunities to become
acquainted with folks ashore.
They were undergoing training,
and while they were allowed j
shore leave, it was necessary that j
they be back aboard ship at nine
o'clock each night.
Lieutenant-Commander S. B.
Cook, in charge of the group that
left today, said that Southport's
good will and cooperation with j
the navy was very much appreciated
by the officers and men.
