When Actions Speak houder
Than "Words
The patriotic manner in which telephone men and women
have carried on since Pearl Harbor speaks louder than
w, r' . When war started telephone workers were already
i? :h midst of the greatest construction program ever
undertaken. As war progressed their job grew more complicated.
However, every war telephone service demand
f was met on or ahead of schedule, though it meant workin.'
lung extra hours day after day.
While doing this tremendous war job, the urgent tele
phone needs of the public were not forgotten. There are
d t-L n-.-re than 500,OUO more telephones in service in tne
H Southern Bell territory than in 1940, and service is being
r rained in spite of the fact that nearly one-third of
male employees are in the armed forces. Telephone
opera: - are now completing more than 450,000 more
calls each month than in the summer months of 1940,

y Telephone workers have accepted their wartime re9
ties, appreciating the vital part they have in the
successful prosecution of the war?shouldering their tasks
cheerfully and unselfishly as the men in arms shoulder
their guns.

j One more thing?on the way up
on the train, the young son struck
up a conversation with a very
amiable lady. Their conversation
was congenial enough to start
with, but when the lady turned
out to be Mrs. Jesse Weeks, niece
of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Weeks, of
Southport, and she found out she
was talking with a native of
Southport it turned into a "Do
you know so and so?" conversation.
Mrs. Weeks and her son were on
