A potential new, enemy to the growth of tobacco 1 plants in Eastern North Carolina has been found in the counties of i Duplin and Sampson, Dr. D. L. I Wray, entomologist with the State Department of Agriculture1 reported Wednesday. ' According to Dr. AVray, the recent warm spell has brought forth millions of tiny insects known as "springtails" on tobacco plant beds situated in or near woods. j "Although apparently no damage has been done, due to the fact that the plants are just sprouting, there is quite a bit of anxiety on the part of farmers j whose plant beds have been at-! tacked by these insects," assert-1 ed Wray. He said the insects ? known as "springtails" because of their appendages, which they use in jumping about?are bluish in color, and about the size of the head of a pin. The insects appeared in such quantities on the tobacco beds' as to form a purple blanket several inches in depth, Wray reportid. They are also seen by the millions in surrounding woods and in ditches and in mudholes, and even in fields which are being plowed. "One farmer told me he saw a bluish mass of something along a country road, and upon close ex-1 amination found it to be spring tails, which is one of the most primitive of insects. The scientific name for them is collembola. They are wingless and frequently have no eyes," said Wray. He declared he had never seen them in such quantities as during the past month. i A single oyster mav spawn 500,000 000 eggs in a season.
