Merchants Get Sane Advice Told To Be On Lookout For User! Scales Now Beinsr Sent Into State For ReSale RALEIGH.?C. D. Baucom, superintendent of the Weights and Measures division of the State Department of Agriculture, has warned North Carolina merchants to be on the alert in the purchase of used scales which are now being sent into this State for resale. Within the past month, Baucom said, 260 of these scales have been tested and less than four per cent were found to be in "workable" condition. The scales _ not approved were condemned and will be held until they can be placed in good condition. In the event this is not possible, they may be destroyed. Of the 260 scales examined, 150 were found in Goldsboro, 10 in Raleigh, and 100 in Charlotte. Baucom said his inspectors are now "on the trail" of others which have been shipped into this State in recent weeks. "Any person purchasing: scales jfrom anyone other than a legitij mate scale dealer should make | certain they are in good condition before payment Is made," ad| vised Baucom. He explained that the Scale Mechanic Act was set up to protect owners and users of scales against the practices of the unscrupulous, incompetent, and fraudulent "selfnamed" scale mechanics. He said the law forbids the sale or moving of any condemned scale until it has been put in a satisfactory weighing condition. ; Pacifii Ocean ^ NEW YORK?No hit and run attacks are defiant and unchallenged assaults of TJ. Such attacks, from the sea, can be expected to . continue against Japan's communications lines. Taking a chapter from European war, the importance of paralyzing rat ; transport is being stressed.
