Such ?tories are read by hundreds of thousands of people and create in the minds of many such readers a desire to some time visit this county. The Brunswick county folk who | know of something interesting I and unusual can help with a great deal of publicity for the area by passing on what they knov.- to the writer of this col umn. I I At Shallotte an always in- 1 teresting character is Irving j Hewett. Formerly hale and | hearty and a good worker, he i has been bent nearly double with rheumatism for a good many years. He can barely get about with the aid of crutches. With a wife and six small children, he is still pretty independent and , asks aid of no one. For the past few years he has been operating a small fish market at Shallotte, filling in the time while waiting for customers by sharpening and setting crosscut saws. Many of the good folks of the Shallotte 1 community go out of their way ? to take their saws to Irving to be sharpened, and this is as it should be. Others might well go out of their way to give him something to do. ' Last week Representative Odell Dynamite FOR Ditching and Stumping AISO Fuse Gaps and Crimpers and Blasting Accessories BEST PRICES M. C. GORE 1 MILE SOUTH OF LONGWOOD, N. C. CLEANING - PRESSING Expert Work Reasonable Prices QUICK SERVICE W. D. McLlELLAND SHALLOTTE, N. C. Williamson stated in an inter view that he planned to intro duce a bill providing for a closed commercial season on oysters *ln Brunswick county. Such action, I he said, was dependent on what | the folks who engage in oyster ing wanted him to do. Seen again | this week, the representative [stated that all who want to see him Friday and Saturday were in favor of the closed season. (The movement to have the clos | ed season is inspired by the fact that the neighboring ? state o; j South Carolina has a closed sea son on commercial oystering fishing. As a result hundreds of i thousands of bushels of Bruns wick oysters are hauled away into Sou^h Carolina and other states. The local oyster beds are being stripped bare at many points along the coast. The Shallo'.te branch of the Waccamaw Bank and Trust com pany will be moving into its | new brick home the last of this week. During the little over six months that this bank has been serving the Shallotte section i'i Brunswick county it has estab lished itself as an institution for | good that performs a real ser ivice. The folks in the lower part I of the county realize the value !cf the banking service that they [now have and expressions of ap preciation are heard freely. Along with the appreciation of the bank itself, there is appre ciation and congratulations to wards E. D. White, who con structed the splendid brick build ing in which the bank and the Shallotte Soda Shop a;e both located. This week is finding us again making the rounds with the Brunswick .-ounty tax collector. Two or th ee times a year W. P. Jorgenstn makes his rounds las an accommodation to tax pay | ers who do not often get to iSouthport. We make the trips jwith him because they allow us the occasional opportunity of going into sections and seeing friends of the paper whom we do i not often see.
