Called At Half-Time Due
To Di?order Among The
Crowd
A row among spectators, dur
ing- which knives were allegedly
drawn and one of the partici- 1
pants received cuts about the
head, resulted in both Principal
J. T. Denning:, of the Waccamaw
school, and Ooach Guy Womble,
of Leland, expressing: their out
right disgust with the conduct of
some of the spectators at the
high school basket ball grimes.
Waccamaw and Leland were
engaged in a regular scheduled
game at Waccamaw Friday
night. The girls played the tilt
first and Leland won with a
score of 9 to 5. Following this
game the boys came on and the
contest was rather spirited. At

Sextet Friday Night
Southport divided a double
bill with Shallotte high cagers
here Fr Jay night, the local boys
taking a close 17 to 13 contest
after the visiting lassies had
walked off with a 21 to 14 ver
dict in the curtain raiser.
Leonard led Shallotte to vic
tory in the curtain raiser.
Leonard led Shallotte to vic
tory in the ope ling game with
a total of 14 points. Hickman led
Southport vith 6 points for the
evening.
The boys game was a low
scoring encounter throughout,
with Shallotte accounting for but
a single field goal . during the
first half. The pace picked up for
both teams during the third
a score of 16 to 10.
During the half a spectator,
said to be from Old Dock in
Columbus county, a few miles
from the Waccamaw school, is
reported to have lost his temper
at the rooting support that Le
land spectators were giving their
team. The chip on his shoulder
was promptly knocked off and
something in the nature of a
free for all fight was quickly
underway among the spectators.
The ladies, both among the
spectators and those constituting
the girls teams, were badly
frightened and the last half of
the game had to be called off.
Most of the spectators and some
of the players had left the gym
nasium before the fight ended.
Coach Womble said that there
was not the least trouble or dis
pute among his players. Prin
cipal Denning said the same thing
with regard to Waccamaw. The
unfortunate occurrence originated
among and was handled entirely
by spectators.
Both gave their own players
and the players of the other
school a clean bill of health.
