Rev Mr. Dosher, while at le Pilot office, stated that the ?sent flood on the Cape Fear is not doing any damage at illy. The levees built in 1945-46 e holding the river waters back. 1945 his section of Bladen unty had the worst flood in aory. The water became knee ep in the preacher's home and hundreds of other homes. Some ire completely washed away rf crops and livestock suffered rfly. A note from Col. George W. alette, Executive Secretary of fc States Ports Authority, is us for various data to Bist in an article he is compil E on Southport and Brunswick fiinty. Some of the Information l> desires us to submit is relative D interesting old timers along he coast or elsewhere in the Hr.ty. chiefly fishermen. Sending in his renewal this week, E. C. ~ Gillenwater of Kings port, Tcnn., says that he enjoys reading The State Port Pilot very much. Mr. Gillenwater is interest ed in the Brunswick county beaches. During the war days Mr. and Mrs. Phillip S. Golden, of Manito, 111., resided in Southport for three years. Mr. Golden was stationed at Oak Island. Since they went back home they have be^n steady readers of this paper. Writing last week, Mrs. Golden said: "Every week The Pilot arrives it seems like we are making a visit to Southport." 1 Himself an advertiser, Charles! Russ of the Russ Food Center at j | Shallotte, was looking over the j advertisements in The Pilot this' i week. When he saw the advertise ment of the Thomas Cafe, near the state line, he paused to say: I "These are mighty good folks you have here." We have never met the MisSus who runs the cafe, but i ; we can agree with Charles that I Mr. Thomas is a fine'fellow. So j is their son. Waban Thomas, who j won the light-heavyweight boxing championship in Wilmington some ; weeks ago. The really big story of Bruns ! wick county during the past week j has been the finding of deep sea commercial fishing grounds off the Brunswick coast. At Shallotte1 this week, we were surprised at j ! the number of folks from all along the coast who were in terested in it. J. E. Cook, cashier 1 of the Shallotte branch of the Waccamaw Bank and Trust Com-j pany, seemed to think that it was opening up new commercial fish ing possibilities just as great as ithe already established shrimping | industry. Several Southport people are1 understood to have received the i cards of a new chain letter rack-1 et that is now being used in the mails. It is a very simple pro- ] cedure. The card invites the re ceiptant to send a tea towel to a name and address that is given on the card. When the name of the sender of the towel gets in a certain position she will re ' ceive 36 tea towels, or so the card states. Don't get excited at the prospects if you receive one of the cards. It simply means j that you are on a sucker list as a person who will send something for nothing, if you are asked to do so. While he was wrestling with a highway drainage problem one day this week, District Mainten ance Superintendent Mallard stat ed to us with much feeling that some day he wanted to go to some point on a highway and lay off a town just like it should be laid off. Mrs. R. H. Holden of Shallotte was complaining this week that we did not go to see her when I she fell and cut her knee the | last of January. She says she | had to have three stitches taken | to sew it up and she stayed in | bed a week and a half. We hadn't i heard of It. As a matter of fact, we believe her accident occured about the same day when we sat down suddenly just off the side I walk. Mrs. J. A. Russ, formerly of Shallotte and 409 Main St., Hen ANNOUNCEMENT The Shallotte Livestock Market ? ? will be open for the purchase of hogs and cattle, R'ery day, beginning Monday, Dec. 1, 1947, and continu "? each day thereafter. DAILY MARKET PRICES WILL BE PAID K McKinley Hewett, Mgr. Shallotte, N. C. dersonville, N. C., has changed her name arid address to Mrs. Frank S. Pittillo, R. 1, Box 300, Bartow, Fla. Mrs. Pittillo was married some weeks ago and moved to Florida. Last week's issue of this paper was slightly missdated in addi tion to having other short com ings. As a matter of information to the few who did not notice the mistake, the paper was dated 1848, making last week's paper just 100 years old. A. R. Mooney of Supply, was the first to write in and sarcastically ask us if the fish were biting good then, and if we were the reporter for the pa per at that time. In fact, he was wondering if the unusually bad weather in February had caused Brunswick to jump back 100 years. There are likely to be a lot of candidates out for the seat that Congressman J. Bayard Clark proposes to vaccate at the ex piration of his present term. The southern part of the district will have to concentrate pretty much on one candidate if it is desired to furnish the successor to Mr. Clark. With all due respect to the other candidates who are out and others who may come out, Brunswick county has never had a Congressman and the concen tration in Brunswick, if there is concentration, will be on Bunn Frink. If he is nominated and elected he will take his seat in Congress with the object of serv ing New Hanover, Columbus, Bla den, Robeson, Cumberland and Harnett just as well as he serves Brunswick. We adjudge that large mouth bass, goggle eyes, yellow perch and blue gills will be biting good within a few days, if they are not already biting. We are drawn to this conclusion by the fact that W. C. (Slim) Osborne and Crawford Rourk, as well as Jim mie Prevatte, have all been men tioning fishing trips to us during recent days. To think of those fellows is to remember the ang lers prayer, which is repeated hereinwith after a slight variation is made: "Lord give them "grace to catch a fish, so big that even I, when telling of it afterwards, shall have no need to lie." Mrs. Ida Arnold, one of our subscribers at Aberdeen, which is by way of being in the winter resort section of North Carolina, writes us: "While reading my State Port Pilot of last week I came across an item where our Rovin' Reporter says that there were a lot of people in Southport who have not seen any snow In six years. I wish you would tell those folks that they ought to take a trip up to Aberdeen. Chit of the last five weeks there has only been one week when the ground here was not covered with snow. I have seen the dirt only once since I came here, and I don't like so much snow. I am getting homesick." The mail for the Camellia Inn comes to our box and in due course of time- is carried around to the proprietor. On the 3rd of last October Louis Woodburry of Wilmington mailed the good lady a check in settlement of an in surance claim. This check never reached her and in due time, af ter Mr. Woodburry had been ad vised of the circumstances, a new check was written and sent, while payment was stopped on the old one. This week the original check was delivered and was promptly returned to Mr. Woodburry. Both of them are marveling greatly how it took a check mailed in Wilmington f?ur and a half months to reach Southport. To us the answer is perfectly simple. We were cleaning off our half of the State Port Pilot desk last week and found the envelope con taining the check. Just as if he did not know that our private fishing hole wai better than anything he has in the whole state of Florida, Bill Reynolds, formerly of Shallotte, sends us an invitation to come ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SOUTHPORT Peace and Good Order, Chapt. 4. Section 10 No person shall fire a gun or pistol or other firearms within the limits of the City, unless the written permission of the Mayor be first obtained. Neither shall any person use sling-shots, air guns, or instruments throwing projectiles of any kind, or throw missiles of any description by hand within the city limits, neither shall any person fire torpedoes, fire crackers, rockets, or fireworks of any description upon the sidewalks of the city. A violation of this section shall sub ject the offender to a fine of five dollars for each and every offense. This Ordinance Will Be Strictly Enforced JOHN D. ERIKSEN, Mayor CITY OF SOUTHPORT down to Lake Okeechokee and go fishing with him. In his letter Bill committed treason by saying that when he left North Caro lina his windshield was so cover- j ed with ice that he drove through the whole of Georgia before it came off. We will appreciate it if he will write us about August and advise us how large the mos quitoes are down there on Lake Okeechokee. From our good friend, M. D. Graham, of Deborah, Iowa, who plans to go fishing with us this summer if he catches up with us when we have the bait and are not tied up with some other fellow, we have received, free gratis for nothing and freight pre-f paid, 9 bushels of the new variety of Clinton spring oats. Mr. Gra ham did not plan for us to eat the oats. His idea is that they will do just as well here as they are doing in Iowa. We have given three bushels each to Hubert Swain of Southport, J. L. Stone of Shallotte and J. E. Dodson of Ash. They are to plant them and see how they will do. Several experiments with the new minnow trap sent us recent ly by Walter Horvath, New York sportsman, have revealed it to be very effective. Some time right soon now we will have to use it to lay in a supply of minnows. As a matter of fact, Attorney G. Butler Thompson, of Lumberton, is threatening to come down thi3 week end. We also know that L. T. Yaskell, of frozen New Jer sey is homesick to come down to the only part of North Carolina that has not had any snow in 1948 or any other recent year. He is especially homesick just now when he knows there is a very big crop of large mouth bass and goggle eye perch wait ing for us to feed them minnows.
