New Strain Of Oats Doing Well Three Brunswick County Farmers Trying Out Oats Which Are Reported To Produce Unusually Well John L. Stone. Shallotte town ship farmer, reported Monday that his Clinton oats are growing fine and are mighty pretty. He was very much pleased at the prospects. Just a couple of hours before Mr. Stone was seen Her bert Swain, of Southport made a similar report on his oats. Both Mr. Stone and Mr. Swain were presented with three-bushel bags of the Clinton oats for planting early in February. Coun ty Agent J. E. Dodson was given another three bushels for his farm in Waccamaw township. All of the seed oats were donated j through The State Port Pilot by' M. B. Graham, Iowa farmer and dairyman. Here early in the year to look after a blueberry farm in which he is interested, Mr. Graham was enthusiastic about the Clinton oats, new variety. They are un derstood to have hardly gotten outside of Iowa where they orig inated and where the produce around 100 bushels per acre. Mr. Graham thought it would be a fine thing if these new oats ?would do as well here as they have done in Iowa. So, he sent i the paper nine bushels, free and freight prepaid, for the purpose of letting our Brunswick farmers ? try them out. Getting Ready j For Herring Run Residents Of Winnabow Community Report That Fish Have Failed Thus Far To Show Up In Any; Great Number Residents of Winnabow say that the real runs of herring in Town Creek will not be underway for! eight or ten days more. A few; of the fish have been taken but hardly enough to make the net ting operations worth while. The first of April will see the fish begin to come in much more num erously, they say. Netting during the season can only be done on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and on those nights. Nets must be out of the water by midnight and all nets must be registered. If the usual custom is followed hundreds of fish frys will be held along upper and lower Town Creek in the next few weeks. Many parties come from a long distance and either bring and re gister their nets or get with local j fishermen for the trip. The usual practice is for each party to have j a fish fry somewhere on the banks of the creek. The surplus fish are then taken home or sold. Kitchen Accidents She: "A large percentage of accidents occur in the kitchen." He: "Yes, and what's more we men have to eat them ar.d pretend to enjoy them." Auctioneers Pictured above are the Golds ton Brothers, twin auctioneers, who are In the way of becoming as well known in real estate cir cles as the famous Penny Bro thers of an earlier day. The Gold ston Twins will be seen in action locally when they hold a sale of Long Beach lots next Monday. POSTAL EXAMINATION Mrs. Sudie S. Chadwick, acting postmaster at Navassa, announces that the U. Popcorn May Be New Crop Winnabow Farmer Turning To His Crop After Being Rained Out Of Planting Usual Amount Of Small Grain Fall and winter rains prevented Earl Earp, Winnabow farmer. | from getting in more than 40 [acres of grain. He planted 30 ; acres in wheat and 10 acres in oats. ; Never having planted much to .bacco, the acreage reducation in that crop does not bother him, i but he still has to look around for cfops to take the place of the 160 acres that he had planned to have in grain. Some of this will i go in an increase of both peanuts and corn. Some, perhaps in -po tatoes, 5 acres in cotton and he1 I plans to try out one new crop. He stated Monday that he will (plant three and a half acres in] I popcorn and see how that will do. [Excellent markets for this crop j are to be found in Georgia, Ala I bama and various other places. So far as is known, this will I be the first time in recent years j that any Brunswick farmer has i gone into popcorn growing as a staple farm crop. Many farmers plant a row or two of it for use jat home, but there does not ap ? pear to have been any effort to j make it a regular crop.
