READ THE WANT ADS FOR PROFIT! We are now in a position to take care ol your orders for lumber, building supplies and paints. SMITH BUILDERS SUPPLY, Inc. Castle Hayne Road Dial 2-3339 Wiimington, N. C. Rovin' Reporter (Continued from page one) cables added to those already here allow for the installation of 152 new phones in town and the immediate area. Sgt. Mack Hewett and Sgt. W. O. Reynolds, Shallotte boys who are stationed at the Myrtle Beach Air Base, recently had as their guests at Shallotte Sgt. John K. O'Doherty who, as you probably guess, is an Irishman by birth and temperament, and Sgt. P. Fuqua, of Lafayette, Tenn. Both the visitors came to Shallotte TO MY FRIENDS OF BRUNSWICK COUNTY: Saturday is the last opportunity you will have in 4 years to choose your Democratic Candidate for the Office of Register of Deeds. * / It has been my privilege to serve my fellow citizens in this office for five years and four months this coming December, and it always has been my purpose to ren der Honest, Courteous and Untiring Service. If I am the nominee following Saturday's Primary, I promise to give you four more years of the best ser vice of which I am capable. . . . Let us hope and pray that the next four years will be a period of peace and prosperity. Amos J. Walton 9 Brunswick County Register Of Deeds SCOTT The People's Candidate For GOVERNOR DIRT FARMER - ACTIVE CHRISTIAN LEADER I with the idea that oysters were] I grown in orderly rows, like po-, tatoes. They also had a lively in terest in and had a lively debate on 'how Shallotte got its name. (The Tennessee man held to the theory that the town got its Iname from the small wild onions {and the Irishman, with a roman-! ; tic slant, held to it that the name j came from. Tennyson's "The Lady of Shallott." Their argument did not settle this old question, but both agreed that Shallotte is a j splendid place to fish and they| i were much impressed with the ; fine, hospitable people they found there. Relative to the above visit Sgt. O'Doherty and Sgt. Fuqua have both just written us. It seems that they are journalistic students and with no small ability. They say that it is impossible for them to thank individually the many kind people they met up with at Shallotte for the hospi tality they received. So, they appealed to the power of the press to help them discharge their obligations, at least in part. TTiey also spoke a word in praise of the warmth and humanity of The State Port Pilot, saying that in it something of chair store journalism has been sacrificed, and that its human Interest stuff makes good reading. Pictures of Southport's Model' T. Fire truck and accompanying stories are beginning to appear generally in newspapers and magazines. The pictures were not tops, as pictures go, and they did not give the old wagon full credit for its real appearance. The quarter of a century old vehicle is an object of much gen eral interest. We were not expecting any thing of the sort. When we re turned from Shallotte and Hol den Beach Saturday night we were right much surprised when Principal H. T. Sanders, of the Southport school, handed us a cigar. He is the father of a new baby girl. Just to illustrate the need of telephone communication through out Brunswick county, it may be mentioned that Dr. W. H. Davis, one of the deans at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Louis ville, Ky., was remarking Sat urday that he hatd to drive all the way from his cottage at Holden Beach to Southport just to make a long distance phone call. It is understood from unofficial sour ces that Caswell Beach and Long Beach are to get phone service this year, through the Southport system. Another system at Shal lotte or Supply would be a God send to a large area of thickly populated oountry. It's only a small patch, but C. R. Livingston of Southport should be getting roasting ear corn in a few days more. We have no ticed that his patch of corn tas seled out a week or more ago. In the current issue of the Carolinian, the literary magazine of the University of North Caro lina, Halstead Holden of Holden Beach had two very fine pen and ink illustrations. One of Bruns wick's most promising young men, Halstead is versatile in many fields and has a personali ty that gains him friends with all whom he meets. We met up with some interest ing people Oils week in Mr. and Mrs. Tom Davis and Tommy Davis, Jr. They are with the Parker Brothers, publishers of the Hertford County Herald, and (?Were vacationing at Holden Beach with Mrs. F. S. Thomas, at her cottage. Mrs. Davis was in school at Greensboro with Mrs. J. M. Harper and Mrs. Earl I. Brown of Southport. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hewett, of Supply, have returned home from a week's visit in Washington with their daughters, Mrs. Gene Hewett and Mrs. Bertram Gray. The daughters get The Pilot there in Washington and Mrs.i Hewett says that they look for ward to its coming every week. With eighteen days between his leaving San Antonia, Texas, and reporting in California, Bea mon Hewett, son of Mr. and Mrs. McKinley Hewett, of Shallotte, has been spending nine days at home. He is serving with the U. S. Army Air Corps. Mostly folks give us a bawling out for what we put in this col timn. Sometimes it is for what we don't put in it. This week, however, Prof. Harold C. Bird of Duke University, summer time resident of Holden Beach, wrote us from Durham, thanking us for something we wrote. Then about the same line of things, O. C. Bain, Wilmington District Manager of the Bell Telephone Company, is so impressed with the need of better telephone ser vice in Brunswick county and the business angle to suclr service that every time we write any thing about telephones he goes and puts in a long distance call, asking us to send him half a dozen copies of the paper. BACK ON DUTY Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Potter re turned to Southport Saturday night and Mr. Potter has resum ed his work as soil conservation ist for Brunswick county. TTiey spent the past two weeks at their old home in Oklahoma, Mr. Potter being on his vacation. FOR SALE: New cement block building, located on 66-ft. lot on highway near hospital.
