Sheppard Have Been Shipped North For Planting In Fields The last truck load of Bruns wick county tomato plants pro duced near Southport on the river road for New Jersey to mato farmers left here Monday afternoon for Shiloh, N. J. E. H. Sheppard, Shiloh man who produced the plants, is him self an extensive tomato grower In New Jersey. In addition to producing the plants for his own farm he did much in the way of I supplying the Prichard Canning ! Company of Trenton, N. J. The j canning company, in turn, sup plies the plants to farmers who j grow tomatoes for their plant, i Mr. Sheppard, vary well pleas 'ed with his two years of experi menting with growing plants nere, will be in the business in a much more extensive scale in 1949. He has purchased land ' that is considered a great deal [more suitable for his needs than ; any he has been using. Some of >the land used this year was I sandy, and sweeping winds drift i ed sand that bled the plants, J causing considerable loss, j Although his plant growing for j this year is finished, he will be j back at Southport in ten days to ' look after the big acreage he , planted in watermelons this 1 spring. On Island Property; Try ing Crotolaria Some rather interesting ex periments are being made at Gause Beach by D. Stowe Crouse [of Myrtle Beach. Mr. Crouse, 'who bought this beautiful strip of the North Carolina coast three years ago, is casting about for ways and means to fix a growth of some sort on the great sand ' dunes. He is now experimenting with crotolaria to see if it will take root and survive. In an interview with him this week he said that he believes that if he gets mois ture at planting time or soon I thereafter he could get the croto llaria started to grow and there jufter it would be easy. The plant reseeds itself. Some parts of the island, be tween the intracoastal waterway and the ocean, appears adapted to plants and grass of some sort. Mr. Stowe frankly stated that he was only experimenting now and that if he can make a show ing to start with he hopes to enlist the aid of Federal or State Conservation people. The lack of a good road to Gause Landing is another big problem that Mr. Crouse has to j contend with In planning future i development of his property. 'However, from Shallotte to Gause Landing the road runs through a fine, thickly settled farming {community and there are scores of year-round homes at the land ing. It is thought that with these j conditions there will be little trouble in getting a good road a little later. Urge Supervision Of Vet Program Messages Sent Pointing To Dangers Of Exploitation Unless Close Check Is Maintained . By its recent protest to the! Veterans Administration and to j members of Congress regarding the lack of adequate supervision of education and training of former servicemen under the GI Bill, the North Carolina Veterans [Commission -took the first step in pointing out the dangers of J exploitation in the nation wide veterans program which, with out supervision, might eventually ilead to its discontinuance or dras tic curtailment. According to Leonard W. Bar rett, dist. officer the Commission [wrote senators and congressmen: "We have been justifiably proud of the entire veterans pro gram in this State up to now; however, we view with much con Jcern the misuse and deterioration which inevitably will result witli |OUt proper supervision of some kind." TO MY FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS: I desire to express to you my deep appreciation for the splendid support you gave me in the Primary Elec tion on Saturday in my race for the Democratic nomi nation for Congressman from the 7th Congressional District. I shall not forget these favors accorded me by my friends and neighbors of Brunswick County. HARGROVE BELLAMY Beach Visitors Begin To Appear (Furniture Arriving For New Homes And Many Visit ors Already Showing Up For Beach Season I With the primary election now over and June here, Brunswick 'county beaches began to fill up i in ernest the first of the week. On a trip from Southport to Shal lotte Monday several truck loads of furniture were noted heading for Holden Beach, Caswell and Long Beach. In most cases the homes at the beaches are already well furnished, except for the I new cottages built during recent j months. * Nine new houses are now in [process of construction at Long Beach according to residents of that growing center. Caswell Beach also has a number unuer construction. At Holden Beach dry weather while the new paved road was being graded resulted in a bad detour that held up building and other operations somewhat.
