The use of fertilizers' on straw
berry fields is governed largely
by the same principles that ap-l
ply to their use on other crops.!
As soils differ greatly in their
compossition on the problem of ?
fertilizers in chiefly local, to be I
solved by each grower according t
to his own conditions. However,
from my observations in the field
and on the markets, talking with
the growers who were producing
different yields and qualities ofi
berries, I found consistently high)
yields and best qualities from I
growers who had made two appli-'
cations of fertilizer and given the!
beds the proper care in doing
this.
It is suggested that a fertilizer!
with an analysis of 5-7-5- or 6-8-6 j
be used with at least half of the
nitrogen coming from organic
sources. For average conditions j
in eastern North Carolina an ap-|
plication of 750 pounds per acrej
in late August or early September !
and another 750 pounds in Dec- j
ember or early January should be
made. The August or September
application should be applied as
follows: one-half of the fertilizer
in furrows (2 to 3 inches deep)
on each side of the row and cover
er. The December or January
? treatment should be applied on
[top of the bed when thoroughly|
'dry and brush the loose material
off the leaves at once.
' The August or September appli
cation is suggested to stimulate
growth and fruit bud formation
during the fall months and the
December or January treatment
will supply plant food for matur
ing the crop.
Plans now to do this for it is
far too late next spring when |
you find your yield and quality
is poor.
