Hunting Result Quite Different Ralph L. Canady Gets His Buck But Joseph Hufham Shoots And What Do You Suppose He Got? BV JOSEPH Hl'FHAM DELCO.?Oh, "deer" me, my plight: But first let me tell- you about Ralph L. Canady's luck. Ralph started down into his dad's pasture one day last week: to see If he could find the where! the pigs were getting- out. On second though he took his gun along, and with him six number six shells. Some distance from the house he paused, looking from tree to tree for a squirrel. Then it wasi that he heard something "flip!" off to one side and there he saw SQUARE and R O U N D DANCE SAT. NIGHT EVERY WEEK 8:00 to 12:00 MUSIC BY Dixie Pioneers ADMISSION Gentlemen $1.00 Ladies' 50c SPONSORED BY SOUTHPORT LIONS CLUB a big 6-polnt buck jumping from a bean patch over into the past ure. He had no buck-shot, but the deer was coming toward him, so he up and fired a load of his squirrel shot, and put out both the deer's eyes, and then it was that business really picked up. Ralph realized that if the deer were really blinded, and thus shut in by the pasture fence, chances were good that he would get him, but excitement was running riot, as the deer bounded this way and! that, bnging into trees like a run-1 away bulldozer, and all the time Ralph was giving chase and pep-1 pering him with more bird shot, j Finally he got close enough tol put in a "wad" shot, and the deer fell dead. That was just Ralph's luck; but poor ole me, mine was different. I went across the river and got into the lowlands, squirrel hunt ing. Presently I saw a nice spike horned buck stretched out in the I early morning sunlight, apparen tly taking a nop. Naturally we had happy an ticipations of dishes of good, juicy steak and lots of nice, bfpwn gravey, with or without onions; of how thrilled we would strut i stuff lugging in a whole, big| buck for our very own, and how} our kitchen budget could rest considerably with him tucked a way in our freezer. Like a dftwning man grabbing at a straw, with all his sins com ing before him in the twinkling of an eye, we thrilled with these cheerful ideas even as we raised our gun. Then we pulled the trig ger. Bang! Bang! Twice, to make sure. We had slipped up on bucks {napping in the river swamp be fore, and naturally expected this one to make some effort to bound j away, even after two shots were I fired. But this one just lay there never even gave a kick, and then t it was that our happy expecta tions sank below a zero ebb. Sil Caruso, who coaches the local gridders, said today that he knew little of the Brunswick County team but he was taking no chances on his squad falling in an upset to the invaders, thus he was drilled them hard all the week. The Reds will be top-heavy favorites in the battle, despite losses due to injuries and other cause, becausee the boys from Shallotte are in their first year of football. Caruso statea mat Orben Fow ler, first-string end who has been out with craked ribs and only re turned to practice the past weeek, would not be able to play further this year because of scholastic trouble. Carolina For many generations, thous ands upon thousands of fun-lov-1 ing and sportsminded Tar Heels have enjoyed the bathing, boat ing aid fishing facilities?to name just a few of the many diversion which the coastal areas of the state offer in abundance to its residents and guests, and now North Carolinians have the op portunity to turn their attention to a more serious economic sit uation which, if development and expansion plans are carried out, will revert to the advantage of every citizens of North Carolina. The 1949 session of the State Legislature, which meets in Ral eigh next January, will be ask ed to appro\% plans of the North Carolina State Ports Authority to lay the ground-work and ex tension and long-range ports im provement program?such as the programs in other South Atlantic and Gulf Coast ports which have produced millions of dollars in I revenue for Norfolk, Charleston, Mobile, New Orleans and other! coastal and Gulf cities which have developed adequate port facilities. Efforts are being- made by of ficials of the Ports Authority to acquaint public-spirited citizens of North Carolina with the irrefut able fact that many of these millions could be retained in this state if our ports are expanded and modernized, and provided with adequate facilities for hand ling the millions of tons of to bacco, cotton, furniture, textile products, fertilizer, and numerous other commodities grown, produc ed and manufactured in North j Carolina. The vast majority of tthese commodities at present are being shipped to and through in (other states, to their advantage j and North Carolina's distinct disadvantage. Most folks have either vague ideas, or ideas based on incom plete information, that Southport or Morehead City or Wilmington, or their immediate areas, will garner all the benefits and pro fit from a ports-development, pro CATHOLIC INFORMATION Bugs! "Let's go jump off a roof? Not I, my friend, not I! My life is God's and He alone may take it. He put me here to know Him, love Him, serve Him; and I will serve by living on and bearing confidently whatever crosses He may send. 'Thou shalt not kill!' our God has said, and the Cath olic Church has ever taught that the sane Christian who takes his life breaks God's own law and so commits a damning sin." Suicide! It's all about us, yet 'midst the troubles of this age of ours, the self-destroying Catholic is a rarity. Proof of this was most conclusively given, a few years ago, before the war, in a study of world suicides by Louis I. Dublin and Bessie Benzel, the former the celebrated statistician of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and neither one a Cath olic. This book, entitled "To Be or Not to Be", showed that the rate of suicides per 100,000 population was in Protestant European coun tries, from 15 to 27, while in Italy it was only 9.6, and In Spain a mere 3.5. Ireland showed the low est average of all, and it is en lightening to note that in northern Ireland the number of suicides per 100,000 population was twice1 as great as in the south. ' The Catholic Church has more j and stricter laws than any other Christian group; yet unquestion-l ably its people, as a whole, try) with all sincerity to live up to i these laws at the sacrifice of com- [ fort, riches, and so-called earth ly happiness. | It is no fun to crawl from bed early on a cold, wet Sunday morn ing and trudge long blocks to Mass. It is no fun to hang on tenaciously to an oft-times mis erable life, when self-destruction is so easy. Nevertheless, anyone who wants company for sleeping all Sunday morning, or a com panion for jumping1 off a roof had better not ask a Catholic! If it's anything Catholic, ask a Catholic!
