Cat Uses Harness
When Taking Walk
When does a kitten becomc a j
cat? Dr. D. W. Pittman, White- j
ville veterinarian, regarded the
question as impertinent and j
laughed off the inquiry.
Toby is either a kitten or a cat, j
but Mr. and Mrs. Ward A. Cole- i
man don't know how to classify i
him. If he's a kitten at nine j
months old, he's some kitten. I
And even if he's a cat, he's off j
to a pretty fair start.
All this is preliminary to the |
tale of Toby. He was born dur- j
ing the February snowstorm last j
Winter and grew and grew. His
male master recently went to a >
local store to buy dog harness i
for use with Toby. He estimated
the size and got a No. 9. That
was too little and he exchanged
for No. 11. Finally, he hit the
mark with size No. 14.
And that brings this story to
a near-climax. Toby, so far as
his owners know, is the only fe
line (this avoid? the choice be
tween cat or kitten) that goes
walking like ms traditional
enemy?the dog. He strolls ahead
or follows the leash as hts feline
instincts dictate.
If the dinner hour passes and
Toby isn't taken for a walk, ha -
lets the Oolemana know about
it. Instead of meowing for food,.-,
he walks under the hook wtier* ?
his harness hangs and walla"'
for his exerclat. Thus is It no
strange sight an the streets of
Whiteville to see Coleman, who la
general manager of Radio Sta>
tion WENC, or Mrs. Coleman
strolling along with their huge
feline.

ARMCHAIR .QUARTERBACKS
There ape three million and seven hundred thou,
sand people living in North Carolina. If you want
to make them mad just stop them from being
armchair quarterbacks.\The individual's right to
express his own opinion and to determine his
own action, within the limits of decency, is a
proud Tar Heelia heritage. , r -1
Listen in on any gathering of friends and you
will see what we mean by "armchair quarter
backs.'!?; Their conversation probably will include
football. Ah, how different the scores would have
been if only the "armchair quarterbacks'^ had
called the signals.' But it's all in wholesome fun
and part of North Carolina life.
Or, by chance, the discussion may get around to
how the participating counties and communities
should best spend their share of the more than,
$7,000,000 collected each year in taxes on beer
by the state of North Carolina. Some favor using
these funds to keep local taxes at a minimum.
Others favor spending the beer tax funds for im
proved schools, better health facilities and more
adequate police and fire protection. >..*rn-?
But it makes no difference what the topic. North
Carolinians uphold the individual's right to ex
press openly his own opinion and to determine
his own action, within the limits of decency. Let's
keep it that way.
