News From Dosher Memorial Hospital Mrs. Mildred Ashley of South port entered on Monday as a surgical patient. Bobby Davis of Southport was a medical patient from Tuesday until Wednesday. Baby Milton H. Johnson, Jr., of Bolivia entered on Tuesday as a medical patient. Mr. and Mrs. Preston Herring of Supply announce the birth of a son on Tuesday. Markcus Gibson of Jacksonville, Fla., spent Tuesday until Friday as a medical patient. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Phelps of Ash announce the birth of a son on Wednesday. Funeral Held For Victim Of Attack,1 Funeral services for John Smith, 69, of Shallotte, who dropped dead in downtown Whiteville Thursday afternoon, were con ducted Saturday morning from the Free Will Baptist Church on East Columbus Street by Rev. J. Homer Butler. Interment follow ed in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery ner Chadbourn. The aged man was near the railroad tracks in front of Lea's Warehouse No. 2 when he suffer ed a heart attack and died in stantly. Apparently he felt weak and sat on a stack of crossties for a moment before the attack proved fatal, resulting in his fall to the ground three or four feet below. The Shallotte man was nere on a visit with his sister, Miss Lucy Smith. Other survivors include a second sister, Mrs. Fannie Thomp kins of Chadbourn, and a half brother, Everett Fowler, of Flor ence, S. C. Inspectors Catch Post Office Thief ATLANTA, GA., Jan. 17?The arrest of Jacob Sackstein, alias Jack Sackstein, Jack Shaeffer, 44-year-old Federal parole viola tor, at Cleveland, Ohio, on Jan uary 10th ends a long search by United States Post Office Inspect ors for a man who has been steal ing from the mails and forging and cashing numerous checks. When apprehended Sackstein had in his possession 39 such opened first class letters. He ad mitted systematic pilfering from sacks and packages of letters mail piled on or around over flowing United States mail col lection boxes in lobbies of office buildings throughout the country. Quite 'a number of local check letters were taken and the, forged checks were cashed in Atlanta. ' ' Changing Trend In Legal Papers Along with the years the chartacter of the papers filed at the office of Register of Deeds Amos J. Walton under goes great changes. Any day a few years ago would have seen the filling of dozens of chattel mortgages and crop liens with chattel mortgages. On the 13th of this January six crop liens with chattel mort gages and 3 straight chattel mortgages were filed. Along wit* this small number of mort gages and presenting a striking contrast were 56 land deeds and 2 deeds of trust with only five real estate mortgages. The total number of papers filed during the one day was 72. But whether deeds or mortgages, the employees in Mr. Walton's office have their hands full and the typewriters have to keep up a constant rattle. Thompson Seeks Highway Position Hallsboro Man Promoted For Post Now Held By Bridgers; Endorsements Are Urged The candidacy of W. Avery Thompson of Hallsboro for dis trict highway commissioner came out Into the open over the week end when Representative Junius K. Powell asked citizens of the county to let Gevemor Scott know that they wanted the appoint ment to come to a Columbus County man. It was disclosed that the Demo cratic Executive Committee of the county and the Board of County Commissioners had endorsed' Thompson for the post. Reports from the State capital indicate that the Hallsboro man has an excellent chance of being; named. He is said to have strong backing from other counties as well as in Columbus. The district highway commis sionership is now held by James A. Bridgers of Bladenboro.
