RALEIGH ROUNDUP gA* MAN . ? ? Governor Kerr Scott was c ttl0 time of his life. Just when things ^kin.s darkest ,he became again North most powerful political figure. Like hins bowing toward Mecca, thousands lr Heels salaamed in the direction of ^?h and the man who two weeks ago ying virtually ignored?by the Legis [ 3t least?suddenly became somebody. ie reason for the about-face was clear. (joverr.or. and only the Governor, had |rower to name a new U. S. Senator to the late J. M. Broughton. He could whom he chose .... anybody. (though the term would run only until , war. the man who received the nod ^ have his foot in the door as a candidate next full tenure. Broughton had been ?"ijss than two hours when the storm v Telephone calls, telegrams, then letters, j.; Governor Scott received upwards of . telegrams urging him to appoint this cr that man or that woman to the U. S. P jfSTEAD LED . . . Reports in Raleigh are I the mass of appeals for the appointment miljam B. Umstead was the major sur f cf the week. Many of these telegrams f from men who beat the bushes for J. M. whton in his battle with Umstead last g and there were rumors that there , fjve messages supporting Umstead for one of the next highest?Capus Waynick g?h Point. About this, only Scott and his Ktary. Charlie Parker, would ever know. ?OCDIDATE IN 1950 . . . One thing is sure, jver: William B. Umstead, the man who I edged out by Broughton, Is now a candi k f0r the U. S. Senate in 1950. The cam pi is already underway. Many a citizen priced last year that it was a pity that I such fine, able, and public-spirited men t running against each other. Another aient during the race was that "only J. M. phton could defeat Bill Umstead"; or this: Lje is only one man who might beat thton. and that's William B. Umstead." are already being drawn for 1950. ? AGAINST HOEY ..... For more than six months now Cap us Waynick has been plan ning to run against Clpde R. Hoey for the U. S. Senate seat from Western North Car olina. This has been ncted here, and is extreme ly interesting at this time. . . . Anyway, 1950 will be an eventful political year for Tarheelia. You will have political races in every county?for the Legislature, for sheriff, etc., and also for Congress and for both places in the Senate. Waynick and Congressman Monroe Redden lost a champion in J. M. Broughton. The first person Mrs. Broughton contacted after her husband died was Redden, then Senator Hoey. And, when the news of the tragedy reached; the Nation, it was Redden's son who handled the sympathy calls for Mrs. Broughton. Clyde R. Hoey is getting along in years, but if he decides to run again, the man who ! files against him will definitely have a bear cat on his hands. AT HALF MAST .... The responsibility of flags on State buildings here is in the hands of George Cherry, Bertie County native who is superintendent of State Buildings and Grounds. He succeeded John Bray of Pasquo tank County in this position just a little over two years ago. He. with the advice of the Governor, must decide when the flags shall be flown at half-1 mast. In the 26 months he has been in charge j of buildings and grounds, Cherry has ordered the flags to be placed at half mast for Am bassador to England O. Max Gardner, State Auditor George Ross Pou, U. S. Senator Josiah William Bailey. Editor Josephus Daniels. Democratic National Treasurer Joe Blythe, and U. S. Senator J. M. Broughton. Four of the six. Gardner, Pou, Blythe, and Broughton, died suddenly. Gardner was in New York planning to sail for England, Pou had attended Gardner's funeral and was visiting friends in South Carolina. Blythe was in Wash ington for the inauguration. Broughton was preparing his maiden speech for the Senate. Daniels died after a two weeks illness. Bailey had been ill, though not seriously, for several weeks prior to his death. Only two of the six, Daniels and Bailey, reached the allotted three score and ten, the former being 85 at the time of his death. Bailey was 74. The classes were out of hand with excitement over the basketball games in Wil mington. On Wednesday a struggle be tween the Long Creek-Grady and Shallotte girls lead to a victory for Long Creek Grady. The win ning team came up in the last quarter to make the score 35 to 32. High scorers were Hose Marie Holden of Shallotte who stripped the net with 19 points and Dorothy Miller of Long Creek Grady who contributed 15 points to the winning team. In the next game our boys trounced the battling Rose Hill team by a score of 31 to 19 in favor of Shallotte. The game be ing tight at times, the losing team 'fought hard until the end. High scoring honors went to Audrey Gore of Shallotte with 13 points and Dickson and Knowles of Rose Hill with 5 points each. | Thursday the Southport and Shallotte boys fought it out in an exciting game which ended with a 35 to 26 victory for Southport. The winning team was 2 points ahead at the end of the third, quarter and the battle seemed long and tough. High scorers were Bownier of Southport with 9 points and Audrey Gore who made 11 points for the losing team. Better luck next 1 year, teams. We are proud of our music teacher, Miss Joyce Gasque, who has been chosen to represent Mul lins, South Carolina, in the Peach Festival at Johnson, South Car olina. Miss Gasque, who is very attractive and talented, is admir ed by the whole student body. It seems that the State Port Pilot has gained very much in popularity since the Bolivia, Southport and Shallotte school news has been appearing in it. You should see how the students (and faculty) rush to get it each week. We would like to hear from Leland and Waccamaw, also. The movie shown Friday, "Arabian Nights" was super.
