FIVE POLIO PRECAUTIONS ARE LISTED FOR PARENTS Warning that the 1949 polio sea son is "just around the corner," the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis today issued a list of pre cautionary measures to be observed by those in charge of children during the epidemic danger Deriod which usually runs from May through October, reaching its peak during the hot, mid-summer months. The five easy-to-fol low health rules for children are: 1. Avoid crowds and places where close conta<t with other persons is likely. 2. Avoid over-fatigue caused by too active play or exercise, or ir regular hours. 3. Avoid swimming in polluted water. Use only beaches or public pools declared safe by local health authorities. 4. Avoid sudden chilling. Remove wet shoes and clothing at once and keep extra blankets and heavier clothing handy for sudden weather changes. 5. Observe the golden rule of personal cleanliness. Keep food tightly covered and safe from flies or other insects. Garbage should be tightly covered and, if other dis posal facilities are lacking, it should be buried or burned. The National Foundation also listed the following symptoms of infantile paralysis: headache, nau sea or upset stomach, muscle sore ness or stiffness, and unexplained fever. Should polio strike in your family, call a doctor immediately. Early diagnosis and prompt treat ment by qualified medical personnel often prevent serious crippling, the National Foundation pointed out. The organization emphasized that fear and anxiety should be held tq a minimum. A calm, confi dent attitude is conducive to health and recovery. Parents, it said, should remember that of all those stricken, 50 per cent or more re cover completely) while another 25 per cent are left with only slight after effects. If polio is actually diagnosed, contact the chapter of the Nation al Foundation for Infantile Paraly sis serving your community. Th? chapter will pay that part of th? cost of care and treatment whicfc patient or family cannot meet. CUT OUT AND KEEP FOR REFERENCE Highway 76 was like a river and Sergeant J. R. Pridgen of ! the State Highway Patrol and Engineer E. L. Green of the State Highway Commission rushed here to investigate the possibility of halting traffic. The floodwaters I were up to the fenders of auto mobiles at one time. j Even as late as hudjnight, [flares were still on the highway to warn motorists of the danger on one short section. A State Highway Patrolman stood by. Residents of Bolton never saw anything like it. One mercantile establishment situated in a low spot, was flooded with three or four feet or water. One resident said a wash tub, j setting out in the open, was wi til ling an inch of being full when the rain ceased, j Baptists Will Play Baseball The Southport Baptist church will have two baseball teams this summer instead of one as they had the past two summers. There will be a junior team of boys ten to fifteen, and a senior team composed of boys sixteen and over. James B.
