More Help For
Forest Owners
Brunswick County Citizens
1 Becoming More And More
Tree-Conscious According
To Forester
The citizens of Brunswick coun
ty are becoming more and more
tree conscious with each passing
year. At least that is what Coun
ty Forest Warden Mercer thjnks.
According to ihformation; he has
recently received from District j
Forester Joe Herlevich of White
ville, more people have planted I
seedlings and more timber own
ers have had foresters mark their
timber for cutting this year than
ever before
The State Department of Con
servation and Development's For
estry Division has been given the
go ahead signal for large scale
in-the-woods help to wood land
owners. The past General As
sembly has made it possible tor
them to increase their staff to
37 trained foresters througghout
the State. Fifteen of these forest
ers will work in the woods 100
percent of their time, and the
other 22 will divide their time be
tween fire control and forest
management.
County Warden Mercer says,
"It is my job, not only to fight
forest fires and try to prevent
them, but to help these foresters
when they are marking trees in
the farmers' woodland. I urge all
timber owners to see me before
they sell their ' timber, so we can
have a forester's advice on what
is the best thing to do. With the
shortage of good lumj>er and the
high prices of all building materi
als, it is the duty of all of us who
o-.vn timber to See to it that none
at' it IS wasted,-, 'either thro'agh
fire or bad cutting practices."

Brief Vacation Trip With
His Wife
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Farrell
of Greensboro are spending some
time here at the Camellia Inn.
Mr. Farrell underwent a serious
operation last year and has not
yet completely recovered.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Farrell are
experienced commercial photo
graphers. Their Art Shop in
Greensboro is one of the major
businesses of the kind in the
state. It is learned that they may
lease this' business and buy or"
build a home in or near South
port.
A number of years ago Mr.
Farrell was a frequent visitor to
Southport. Intensely interested
in the fishing and shrimping in
dustry, he has made hundreds of
outstanding photographs, show
ing fishing, shrimping, Bald
Head Island, the Inland water
way, Orton and other scenes in
this area. i
On two occasions before the
war when the officials of the I
Outdoor Writers Association of
America met here, Mr. Farrell
came down from Greensboro,
stuck with the party and pictur

that happened during their stay.
