Stanley, a colored * shallotte, last sum l. couple of terraces ii| g 3 acre field. "It just ^ mllv-u-ashing rain last ? I had the field plowed me I needed some against erosion." he w staked off the lines. w mm how to build the | built them with his cor and 4-disk tiller. He , corn in this field with running with the terrac es which places them on the con- j tour. Each row acts as a small ter race holding the soil and fertilizer in the field where the crops can use it. You no longer see topsoil washed to the lower side of the j field after it rains. Stanley also planted kudzu on both sides of a ditch where terraces empty to keep it from washing. Charles Taylor, ex-service-man and farmer near Winnabow, this spring planted a 4-acre eroded sloping field to kudzu as part of the soil conservation plan that he worked out for his entire farm with the local Soil Conservation Service technician. Kudzu will put this idle land to work for Mr. Taylor. It will supply valuable grazing for his livesstock during summer and fall months when other grazing crops are at a standstill. And it will hold the soil In place while building it up for potential crop land in future years. Harry Chadwick, ex-service-man and farmer of Shallotte, seeded an acre of ladino clover and tall fescue last fall. "X had some well-drained land prepared when I applied to the District for assisance. but when the SCS man came to help me, he said the land I had in mind was too sandy. He suggested I seed my pasture in a low wet field that I didn't think would grow anything. I tried it", Chad wick said. I followed his re recommendations as well as I knew how, and this spring that clover beat anything I've ever seen growing This pasture took the place of expensive protein supplement feed for my hogs," he said. Chadwick will plant 2 acres more this fall as called for in his completex soil and water con servation plan. Odell Blanton, business-man and farmer of Supply, recently com pleted a farm fish pond as de signed by SCS technicians. Blan ton fertilized and managed it ac cording to district recommendat ions. Fish for stocking the pond will be furnished by the Fish and Wildlife Serlvce as arranged for by the Lower Cape Fear District. PERSONALS Mrs. D. J.
