BELLAMY FARM SHOWS Continued From Page One interest in livestock. j -^""This pasture is worth as much me as any land I have, he niiid as we watched his 2 mules j -*nd 12 head of beef cattle graze Hth the heavy growth of grasses j and clovers. "I'm seeding four more acres to pasture and five acres of very sandy land to seri fi: That'll give me all the hay i most of the grazing I need thout taking it off of cropland." - Bellamv didn't wait to protect k sloping lancj until he could see, ?Hgfv gullies in it. Lasti .fall . he ihujlt 1.00^ feet of terraces to cajrv surplus rainfall safely from 'I nve-acre field.' This water is I emptied into outlets at either sidej of the field that will not waShl because of Kuzu growing there. J The terraced field is in,tobacco| this year. Rows . run along , with j the terraces. This gives each tow enough pitch to drain it but not | , enough to wash soil and fertil \fer. The tenant was disturbed j ?jat-first about how he could work i-fcfte&e rows, but now he says they are no more trouble to work than straight rows. Both winter and summer cover j fos are used to protect and im ve cropland. Soybeans, cow- j s, and velvet beans are plaint T&' in corn to help build soil ?iSrtility Lespedeza is seeded on ftfioall grain to take over when the fflfain is harvested. Peanuts are "h'oF^ed off" so that the tops go back to the land. Bellamy uses ryegrass for win ter cover preceding tobacco, and winter legumes ahead of other row crops. "It's cheaper to use a winter legume that's fertilized fW\?ad of corn than it is to grow pn land that's laid over wintet," , explained. "When I cut in a fertilized winter legume, I get the same fertilizer plus a lot of nit rogen that I didn't have to .buy." ? And Bellamy's land gets easier ?W-'work and'more productive each he explained. "Turning un soil-building crops have al (Wfldy boosted corn yield 15 bus hels to the acre. Tobacco made 1200 pounds an acre last year against 1000 founds two years ago," Bellamy said. "In order to apply needed treat ttieht to every spot on the farm, the Shallotte farmer planted one acre of very sandy idle land with longleaf pine seedlings. He plan rc?dl bicolor and sericea along the <M<?c>ds where crops could not tlftqw. Licolor?a tall, bushy, .perennial lespedeza?will supply ?<tood and cover for quail and other 'wildlife. Although Bellamy's farm "face lifting" is not entirely completed, "w/e're counting on another three -years making a lot of difference .(the looks and productivity of this farm. The Rovin' Reportef ""??/Continued from page one) and Mrs. Coy C. McQuis -t?B. His- dad is a hosiery manu 'Hk.aturer at Burlington and the family have a summer home at *?Ga?well Beach. The McQuist on ' children are grown-up Ann, near Jv-grown-up, Johnnie and Jackie <\JWkie is a girl, despite the name, and was the baby until the newest member of the family came along 3ft the Dosher hospital Thursday morning. Johnny was the wily iit the family up until Thurs day. He has now lost some of his importance. A matter not generally known is that the Tide Water Power Company, In addition to whole saling current to the REA, is the biggest retail distrbutor of electric current in Brunswick county. At least this what is said for it. Most of the Tide Water's distrib ution is In Town Creek and North West townships. There, in addi tion to supplying homes and in dividual places of business the Tide Water distributes' commer cial current on an extensive scale. Among the Brunswick county industries supplied with commercial current in that area is the radio station, the Mari time Company's ship lay-in-basin. the big pulpwood loading dock of the International Paper Com pany, the Spiritlne Chemical Company, Gulf States Cresoting Company, Armour Fertilizer works, Virginia Carolina Chemi cal Company, F. S. Royster Com pany, Smith Douglas Company, Wilmington Pine Company and other industries. I Three or four weeks ago we went fishing with Col. Ivan Ben nett. The blue gills were biting pretty good and Colonel Bennett did pretty well for a country boy. We imagine he was pleas | ed. This conclusion is reached ? through his sending us a box of I ten-cent cigars from Fort Sam I Houston, Texas, this week. Fun j ny thing about that beautifully : wrapped box of cigars is that : Colonel Bennett elected to tear i up a front page of the State Port Pilot. He was getting at the heading of this column to paste it on the box and save having to write out the full address. All he wrote the under the heading was "Southport, N- C." The box came through alright. I Henry Massey, a sort of land | baron in partnership with his j brother, Bill, down in Union County came around to see us one CATHOLIC INFORMATION We AH Have Pull In Heaven I knew the Governor, so I wrote him direct for a legitimate per-| sonal favor. I knew the Governor's mother. I knew he loV#d her. I knew she) therefore had honorable influence with him. So I wrote her to plead my cause with her son. I knew, too, an. old family ser vant whom the Governor had pen sioned for life for services worth-, ily rendered. So I wrote him to say a word in my behalf. Now the Governor alone could grant my request and perhaps my plea to him would have been alt sufficient. But it couldn't hurt to use all legitimate "pull" In his mansion. It seemed wise. I did it. God alone can provide for the needs of His creatures, so every Catholic pijays-ito; Him first, in adoration and supplication. But in our father's house there is Mary whom He honored above aH His creatures by inviting- her 'to be* come the mother of His Divine Son, and at whose request Christ i performed pis first earthly mira-1 cle in Cana of Galilee. In our! Father's house there are' the saints I ??servants of God who are-pen-' sioned for eternity for services worthily rendered. Mary, His Mother and ours! The saints, His brothers and sisters, and ours. Pull in Heaven? Why it's tre mendous! It's there waiting for US, if we but ask. To us Catholics it would seem wasteful; it would seem unreasonable; it would seem downright nonsense not to use all possible heavenly pull to back up our requests to God Almighty. I "Holy Mary, Mother of God, | pray for us!" "All ye holy Saints of God, pray for us!" There is equally sound logic be hind every Catholic belief and practice. Our purpose in publish ing these articles here, each week is not necessarily to persuade our readers that our beliefs are right, but rather -to persuade you that they are not unreasonable,' not superstitious, not evil. It is only by creating such mutual understand ing and trust that democracy can be made to work in our commun ity, our country, our world. If it's anything Catholic, ask a CathoHc! For further information writ? P. O. Box . 351, Whiteville, N. C. day this week, bringing his nice family along. It was their first introduction to the lower part of the North Carolina coast and things seemed to be interesting to the family, despite the fact that the heaviest rainstorm of the year elected to come along while we were visiting Fort Caswell, Caswell Beach and Long Beach. Henry told us he has built a four acre fish pond on one of his farms and we believe we will go home before long and take' a look ut it. D. Stowe Crouse, former cham ber of commerce president, form er mayor and still very much in the swim of things at Myrtle Beach between times of looking after his real estate business down there, was here one day this week. Myrtle Beach folks ail have an idea that they have the only beach on the coast worth looking at. Despite this generally partisian feeling, we have been noticing for some years that ] Stowe gets around to Southport j on an average of about once in I every three months. He just has | to keep an eye on a beach sect ion of North Carolina that is reai ily going- to grow.
