Horn Worms Not Bad This Year Growers Have Reported That Few Of These Pests Have Threatened Quality Of This Season's Weed Crop In connection with this year's tobacco crop what is said to have been a remarkable circumstance in Brunswick has been the al most complete absence of horn worms. Normally the tobacco fields have to be sprayed at least once, usually twice. Even then the forms are always destructive and one effect of their devastation can be seen in the numerous holds that are in the leaves of tobacco at marketing time. The worm eats only a small hole but the hole gets bigger and bigger and it does not weigh anything. A leaf that is full of holes does not have much tobacco. This week W. H. Redwine, Shallotte tobacco grower, sent this paper a hand or tie of tobacco. He say# it was picked up at random from a barn of tobacco that he cured. The hand was just a fair sample of the | entire barnfuli, he said. | The Interesting thing about this i sample of tobacco was its beauti- I ful curing and the fact that the , leaves were entirely without horn ' worm holes. "Hie beautiful cur- | tag, says Mr. Redwine, was the j ? result of using automatic stoker J curers in his barn. This system j I automatically keeps the heat in the barn at any desired level. The absence of holes in the leaves, he said, was due to the absence of horn worms. I, Register of Deeds Amos J. Wal ton has also been commenting on the absence of worms this year. He says he always has to spray his crop twice. This year has has not seen a dozen horn worms and some years he has found that many on a single leaf of tobacjo. 45EE PAGEANT '? Mrs. C.
