PASTURES PROFITABLE Continued From Page One It certainly should when con sideration is given to the need for livestock and livestock pro ducts. Considering the number of, acres of cultivated land which hfcve been taken out of the pro- J diiction of tobacco, peanuts, and cotton in the county, every far njer should have a good and well kept permanent pasture. Farmers cin receive aid through PMA for the purchase of at least a dozen kinds of pasture seeds. They are urged to take advantage of their practice thos fall and also to get their orders early forliming mat erials and phosphate to be ap plied to new and old pastures. .'Pastures are one of the mostj important conservation crops. The ltyne and fertilizer increase the growth of both the grasses and legumes in pastures. The icreased ferowth holds the soil in place and increases its fertility and organic | matter. Worth of acp ? Continued From Page One it! is working. It's up to us to j keep it working." ^Besides their basic function in handling local administration of acreage allotment programs, price support and ACP, the far mer elected committees have been called on to prove their worth in many other ways Dur ing the war, government agencies turned to our committee system in many emergencies and they did the jobs successfully. Thus the community committ eemen in our farm program dur ing the past twelve years have been the key link in the program chain that leads to the farmer. While much of the responsibility of administering the ACP pro gram in the county rests with the three county committeemen, the local men are the grass root con tacts with farmers. NEED IS GREAT FOR (Continued from page one) tax payer one cent. As a matter of fact the receipts from the area over an eight year period show $14,855 of credit balance over ex penditures. This figure is more noteworthy when it is considered that 1400 idle acres have been planted to forest seedlings and some of these tree plantations are now ready for their first thinning. Last year forest fires burned on ly one acre of land on the forest] due to alert organization. The social benefits are also of first consideration. Some 105 persons are dependent on the I wages of the regularly employed I woods workers. All products from j the forest are utilized under good forestry management. Sales are made of posts, veneer stock, logs and even pine cones for a forest nursery seed supply. The annual organized deer hunts have-' become a recognized feature of' good game management. The deer population has been greatly increased through wise protection >nd fifteen buck deer were killed ! last season. The public is invited to inspect j the many activities now going on. j i The Forest Supervisor Rufus | Page whose office is at Jones j j Lake four miles from Elizabeth-! | town will welcome any visitors I who are interested in comparing their problems with those of the j ! forest. ) The N. C. Division of Forestry,! of the Department of Conservat ion & Development has for many | years advocated an. adequate sys tem of State Forests. The mini | mum would be one in the Coast , al Plain, one in the Piedmont and one in Mountain regions of the State. They can also be made self-supporting and a matter of pride to all the citizens of the State. Bolton Experience Proves Continued From Page One already done so. There may be I no difficulty in obtaining power machinery for dirt-moving practi ces and technical help may be available, but it is better to be sure. To be eligible for assistance un der the Agricultural Conservation Program, these practices must j I meet program specifications. Pra | ctices which do not meet speci ; ficationS are not eligible for ACP I assistance, and this can be avoid j ed by carefully checking plans j with the County ACP Committee, j For terraces, drainage ditches, I and the dirt-moving practices, de finite specifications have been set :i [ up so that the complete practice will be effective in conserving ; soil and water. It is not too early to visit the | county ACP office and to talk I to a community committeeman about dirt-moving practices to be I carried out this fall. Prior ap i proval must be obtained from i the county office to qualify for I payment on practices. Tobacco was widely used in Europe, much of Asia and Africa before commercial culture of the crop began at Jamestown in 1612.
