GROWTH OF HD WORK (Continued from page one) munity met in the home of Mrs. Wilson Edwards in April, 1947 to organize a Home Demonstration Club. I explained the meaning and work of such a group to an in terested audience. The Delco Club was also begun in April at the home of Mrs. W. L. Hobbs with Hiss Ethel Smith, Acme-Delco Home Economics teacher, as their first president. The tenth district federation met in Bladenboro in May with twenty-two delegates present from Columbus County. September. Discussions were led on plants, planting, rooting and pruning. A "Feed Bag Dress Revue" i sponsored by the local FCX Store j was participated in by eleven! members. Laughridge of Wes-' tern Prong. The Western Prong HD Club j cooperated with the VFW there | in building a community hut. Perfect attendance certificates for 1948 were given to the fol Ten Junior 4-H School Dress Revue winners entered the coun ty event in June to compete for the title. Doris Ann Gore of Guideway ranked first, Lois Ted der of Niew Hope was second and Faye Long of Tabor City was third. Winner of the senjor event was August Collier of Wiiii.eville. Joyce White of Evergreen took second place honors and third place went to Patsy Wilson of Hallsboro. Miss Collier entered competition for the state title at 4-H Short Course week in Raleigh in August. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Long purchased the first pressure cook er on Crusoe Island in June. The Lebanon HD Club had its first meeting in June at the home of Mrs. Ernest D. Hayes and Mrs. i Jessie Harper was named presi dent. During 4-H Camp week July 26 to August 2, 65 Columbus boys and girls attended the outing at Whiteville Lake. Swimming lessons were again taught by David Hammond of Cerro Gordo. Counselors were Mrs. P. P. Vereen of Bolton; Miss I Mildred Winfree, Whiteville Home Economcs teacher; C. D. Raper, farm agent; and myself. The following superlatives were named by campers: Best girl camper?Carolyn Cox of Guide-1 way; Best boy camper?Jerry1 Stephens of Williams Township;! Best group leader?Barbara Weir! of Hallsboro. Thirty Columbus Home Demon stration members attended a pro duction of "The Lost Colony" at Manteo for an eventful and in teresting trip in August. Booths were entered by both; 4-H and Home* Demonstration \ Clubs in the Parmer's and Mer-' chant's Exposition in October.! Thirteen HD Clubs entered and first prize of $75 was won by' the Lebanon Club. Delco took I second place of $45 and Cerro Gordo copped third prize of $20.! Nine 4-H Clubs prepared exhibits ? and Williams Township won first' prize of $75, Cerro Gordo took! second place for $45 and Acme Delco came into third place with! $20. Miss Julia Mclver, Clothing Specialist, gave an education de-j monstration on "Remodeling Hats" to Columbus County Clubs in the Hallsboro Club house with 56 present in March. The Cerro Gordo Home Demon stration Club members met in the Cerro Gordo Home Economics cottage during the latter part of March in order to help the mem bers in remodeling and refinsh ing their hats. Mrs. A. I. Williamson, presi dent of the club, and I led the discussion and workship for the afternoon. Mrs. H. H. Bullock, past presi dent of the County Council, re modeled five hats during the afternoon. Mrs. Irma Harding, International Harvester Company Demonstra tor through the courtesy of Marks Truck and Tractor Co., gave two frozen foods demonstra tions during 1948. Snapbeans, okra, meant and Strawberries were frozen and Mrs. Harding prepared a meal made entirely of frozen foods and served it to the group. John Harris, Horticulturist, gave a demonstration on Yard Beautifi cation to the Fair Bluff dub in lowing: Bethel?Mrs. Dora Mae Ward, Mrs. Ruth Ward and Mrs. Clay ton Gore. - Lebanon?Mrs. W. M. Two year's perfect attendance certificate? were awarded to Mrs. J. F. Wilson of Bolton and Mrs. H. H. Bullock of Cerro Gordo. Three-year. certificates were given to Mrs. George Carroll of Bolton and Mrs. Charles Single i tary of Bolton and Mrs. Dalton | Russ of Bolton. Mr. and J. G. Inman was honor ' ed for five year's perfect atten dance. She is a members of the South Whiteville Club. In the 4-H organization there are now 23 clubs with a member ' ship of 1201, 479 boys and 722 girls. Tho 1948 4-H Camp was can celed because of the polio epide 1 mic as was the Short Course. Gay'e Wells csme here in Sept ember, 1948 as the first assistant agent for Columbus County. There were 18 HD Clubs in Columbus County with an enroll ment of 415. The following lists their achieve ments: Canned?fruits, 14,320 quarts; | vegetables, 20,316 quarts; meats, j 2,055 quarts. | Cured?38,311 pounds of meat. The members made 5,406 gar ments and remodeled 1,205. In fro?n foods 7,530 quarts of fruits, 1,240 quarts of vegetables, and 13,546 pouhds of frozen meats were prepared; The women made 108 hats. A tour of the Cypress and Magnolia Gardens in Charleston was made by club women in April of 1948. In December, 1948 I, the as sistant Home Agent and repre sentatives from Ht) Clubs ih the county were .guests at a Rotary Club meeting. They explained the goals and progress of Extension work in the county. I spoke before the Lions Club in January, 1949 on "My Duty as a Home Demonstration Agent." Plans were made by the eigh teenth district officers and agents in January for the spring dis trict meeting held in Southport in April. In February guests of the clubs were Mrs. Sally Horton of Myrtle Hill Florists, Merlin McQueen's Nursery and E. H. Sheffield of the local Coca Cola Plant who assisted in a demonstration on Home Beautificatioh. I attended the State Farm Bureau meeting and served on the state arrangements commit tee for the woman's banquet. Mrs. Corrine Grimsley, Family Life Specialist, gave a lecture on "Question Ask." with 73 members of clubs present. Miss Lorna Langley, Home Management Specialist, spent a day m April with the home agents, training them for a De monstration on "Floor Finishes." 4-H Club girls held a meeting on Personal Money Project in the home agent's office in April and a representative of the Clarke Sanding Machine Company gave an all-day floor sanding demofr^ stration in the Hallsboro Metho-w dist Church.
