Kulash, entomologist for the North Carolina Agricul-1 tural Experiment Station. The pest can be controled either by oiling the silks of individual ears; by spraying; or by dusting. Earworms are easily recognized, Kulash declares. They cut off silks and leave masses of frass and debris in the silk channel. | Kernels at the tip of the ear are1 eaten down to the cob. This1 feeding may extend all the way down the ear, making it undesir able for human consumption. Control measures are successful only when a careful schedule of | treatments is followed, Kulash emphasizes. For small areas of sweet corn, he suggests the fol lowing control measures: Oiling. When silks begin to dry apply 20 to 30 drops of white mineral oil (100 to 150 viscoscity)' with a hand oiler directly to the j silk channel. Usually only one application is necessary. Applica tions made before silks begin to dry will interfere with pollina tion. , Dusting. As soon as silks be gin to appear, dust corn ears with one of the following: (1) 5 per cent DDT, (2) 3 per cent dichlorodiphenyl - dichloroethane (DDD or TDE, sold commercially as Rhothane), or (3) 40 per cent Ryania, Apply directly to silks at 15 to 20 pounds per acre in four applications spaced two or three days apart. Spraying. Spray silks as soon; as they appear with one Of the i following: (1) 0.25 per cent DDD i (made from water miscible or, wettable powder concentrate), j (3) 0.25 per cent Ryania. Apply j directly to the fresh silks for ? about one second as a cone-shap ed spray or as a solid stream spray, starting when silks appear. Three or four aplications spaced} three days apart should give good control. Use of too much spray j may result in poisonous residues j on the ear. Ears with exposed I tips should not be sprayed. Foliage treated with DDT or; DDD should not be used for stock feed. Materials applied to the j silk channel will not reach ker-' nels. Therefore, they are consid ered safe to use. Larger acreages of sweet corn and field corn may be treated by airplane or gound applications of the dusts or sprays mentionel above. The same schedule of treat ments is recommended. In such treatments, of course, the entire plant will be covered with insecticide. Plants so treated, therefore, cannot be used as feed or fodder for animals. The average octane number of premium gasoline has increased from 70 to 80 actane number since 1930. In a striking clock, the first stroke usually marks the exact hour. More than 2,200 new companies have started up"as oil producers in this country in the last four years.
