?New Chemical Shows Promise Of Controlling Peach Insects a" Peach growers have long kid ded each other about keeping enough fungicides and insecticides , to go into business. The spray programs now in use takes no less than seven different chemicals to control the main insects and dis eases. According: to Dr. C. F. Smith, associate entomologist for the North Carolina Agricultural Ex- ! peirmenfc Station, a comparatively CATHOLIC INFORMATION Lou Ambers Makes The Nine First Fridays . . On the night of September 3rd, -1936, Lou Ambers fought through ."fifteen blistering rounds to become .Lightweight Champion of the World. That's history. At the celebration after the fight, Thursday night changed in to Friday morning and Lou re fused food and drink because he __ was making the Nine First Fri days. That was news, for it was reported in the daily press. But why news? Catholics from every state of life are frequently making the Nine Firt Fridays. It's rather common practice. Com ' mon, yet so superlatively lovely that one might not expect a pugi list so to engage himself. But that's Catholicism! To make the Nine First Fridays one goes to Mass and Holy Com munion on each of the first Fri days of nine consecutive months. On each occasion he must be free from grievious sin and must ab stain from food and drink from midnight till after Mass. That is the practice and the obligation. That's what Lou Ambers was do ing; but listen to his reason for f doing it. The Nine First Fridays is a de votion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus ? a sort of love tete-a-tete in which the Catholic tells his Savior how much he is trying to -realize and appreciate the infinite love of God for man; and how hard he is trying to love Goa in an extraordinary manner to make up for the lack of love on the part of the millions who know not God or who have turned their backs upon Him. And finally the Catholic prays with full confidence for the grace of final perseverance in his quest of Heaven and for the infinite graces of the Sacra ments before he dies. Friday, September 4th, 1936 ? 12.01 A. M. Please visualize the scene. A twenty-two-year-old Ital ian boy, being acclaimed world's champion. "What will you have, Champ?" "Nothing, thank you, I'm making the Nine First Fri days." News? Much more than news. 'Twas an event of far.reaching effect. For world champions of the ring are more adulated and imi tated than world leaders of arts and sciences, of professions and industries, of kingdoms and em pires. Lou Ambers, here's to you! May the memory of your fifteen-round victories never grow dim. May your Nine First Fridays go on and on. May you ever shine forth as a model of physical and spirtual strength for every little boy ? yea, and for every great big man. If it's anything Catholic, ask a Catholic! Dr. Smith has used parathion rather extensively during the past two years in experiments to con trol plum curculio. Now he re ports that it is one of the most promising materials he has test ed. In addition, parathion is show ing promise in the control of scale insects, the Oriental fruit moth and peach tree borer. In tests last year the new chemical gave excellent control of the peach borer when four applica tions were made in May, July, August and September. There were even better results when a combination of DDT and para thion was applied in two applica tions. Parathion is both a contact and stomach poison, Dr. Smith ex plains. However it has a residual effect of only four or five days after application. Since it is poisonous to warm-blooded anim als as well as insects, the scientist urges caution in its use. "We know very few of the an swers* to questions raised about this new material," he explains. "We do know in its concentrated form, it is especially dangerous. After it is diluted for spraying, ordinary precautions should be observed to avoid getting it on one's skin. After spraying, the big operator should bathe thor oughly and change clothing. For peach work, parathion should be used at the rate of IH to 2 pounds of 15 per cent wet table powder per 100 gallons of spray. It can be used with wet table sulphus. There have been no indications that parathion will cause any off-flavor to the peach es or that it will leave any harm ful residue on the fruit if it is not used later than three weeks before harvest.
