DUKE UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES
MAJOR EXPANSION PROGRAM
Plans Call For Raising'
Twelve Million Dollars To
Finance Project At Dur
ham Institution
DURHAM ?A major program
of development and progress is
being undertaken by Duke Uni
versity, it was announced yester
day.
Plans call for the raising of
$12,000,000 to finance the project,
and a national organization of
Duke alumni and friends has been
established to conduct a campaign
for this sum. The organization,
known as the Duke University
Development Program, is headed
by Benjamin F. Few of New
York, vice president of Liggett
and Myers Tobacco Company and
a Duke alumnus.
The University's principal cur
rent needs are described in a
publication now being distributed
by the Development Program's
National Committee. The booklet
points out that the funds sought
will be used to finance key re
quirements such as new buildings,
more scholarships and fellowships,
more research facilities and in
creased faculty compensation.
The present efforts to raise a
substantial sum for Duke are the
first in the University's history,
it is pointed out in the Develop
ment Program booklet. The Uni
I versity came into being 25 years ;
I ago when, through an endowment '
established by James Buchanan '
Duke, Trinity College was ex- j
panded into Duke University. In j
' recent years the Endowment has
provided for approximately 18. per |
cent of the University's expendi- i
j tures.
Pointing out that Duke has ex- |
' perienced the rapid growth in en- !
rollment typical of most institu- j
j tions of higher learning, the book
let makes it clear that the pre
, sent objectives of the Develop
' ment Program are urgently need
ed to accommodate the numbers j
now enrolled.
The new buildings contemplat- 1
ed include:
Men's dormitories to relieve ;
, crowded conditions now existing j
j in present dormitories, and re
| modeling of a woman's dormitory.
A law and administration build
| ing to meet greatly increased de
! mands for legal training and to
1 provide badly needed space for
administrative offices. This build
ing is designed to complete the
main quadrangle on the men's
campus. Its erection will make it
possible , to convert present ad
ministrative offices into class
rooms.
A student and alumni center to
offer additional cultural and re- ]
creational facilities to students
I and a central campus gathering !
] place for alumni.
The erection of these new build
ings and provisions for necessary
utilities and maintenance, will re
quire, it is estimated, approxi
mately $9,000,000.
The remainder of the $12,000,
1 000 sought will be used for in
[ struction and research in medi
cine, faculty salaries and endow
ed professorships, and scholarships
and fellowships.
| Duke's President A. Hollis Ed
j ens, Chancellor Robert L. Flowers,
; and Vice Chancellor William H.
; Wannamaker are honorary chair
[ men of the Development organi
j zation. Active membership in the
] Program's national committee,
! still in the process of formation,
j includes more than a hundred
Duke alumni and friends.
Other committees are being or
jganized throughout the country
'to carry on activities of the De-j
jvelopment Program.
The illustrated booklet being
[distributed in connection with the
(program opens with a brief his
Itory of the University, including
| the old Trinity College era, aerial
views of the two campuses, on
| which the mean's and women's
colleges are located, and photo
! graphs of the chapel and other
points of interest are reproduced
in the booklet.
i Architects' designs for the pro
posed new buildings are included,
with an aerial view showing their
projected locations.

Patrolmen Wear i
Luminous Bands;
Bright Yellow Raincoats, !
Supplemented By Scotch
lite, To Be Distributed In
Near Future
RALEIGH ? North Carolina's
Highway Patrol will make a
colorful addition to its regular '
uniform this winter ? a bright yel- 1
low raincoat with luminous bands !
on sleeves, shoulders and back.
The North Carolina Department
of Motor Vehicles, of which trie
Patrol is a part, announced to- 1
day the arrival of 425 of the eye- i
catching raincoats, replacing the j
black rainwear of war and post- j
war years. The bad weather gear, i
which has a navy blue corduory \
collar, will be distributed to pat- j
rolmen as fast as the black rain
coats wear out.
The yellow color, which was j
used before the war and could
not be obtained during the war (
and immediately afterward, has i
the obvious purpose of making
the patrolmen more quickly dis- j
tinquishable to the motoring pub
lic. The addition of the luminous !
"Scotchlite" bands will permit 1
the patrolmen to be seen more !
quickly at night.
