The boys game promises to be interesting but East Arcadia, in previous en counters, has usually managed to put out a superior girls team. An active and noisy cheering section usually makes things in teresting, regardless of the play- ! ing. ' I CRASH BOAT IS (Continued Fr-tn rage One> j toughest weather. She is a good towboat, good fire boat and stands j radio guard day and night over all transient shipping, as well as ! over the extensive commercial fishing in this area. So many are the needs for this boat that local commercial fish- j ermen and other boatmen say j that when she is called away for even a short period, as in the pre sent instance, another boat should be sent here to take over the watch during her absence. Weat her now is unpredictable and with fishing being done at a distance offshore and with the great a mount waterway and ocean tra vel now proceeding a short dis tance off the coast, local folks are disturbed that the boat is now i absent for even ten days. HOME BUILDING ( Continued from page one) Potter, Jr., moved into their new brick home which recently was completed on West street. It' is an attractive, two story dwelling, one of the most attractive erect ed recently in Southport. With many new homes con structed throughout the town dur ing the past year and a great number of others now in the planning stage for the first of 1950, Southport is being credited with making substantial building progress. 1950 should bring out some surprising building develop ments, according to folks who profess to know what is going on. COUNTY FARMERS (Continued from page one) among their neighbors a com munity committee consisting of three regular and two alternate members, Mr. King explains. At the same time, a delegate and alternate delegate is designated to represent the community at the county convention to be held at the county PMA office on December 16 at 10 o'clock. An eligible voter, according to Mr. King, is any owner, operator, tenant or sharecropper on a farm which is participating in any pro gram administered through the county Agricultural Conservation Association during 1949. This in cludes the Agricultural Conserva tion Program, the Sugar Program, price supporting loans and pur chase agreements, and Federal Crop Insurance. BRIEF SESSION f Continued PYom Page One) Maggie Brown, possession for sale, continued. Walter Hayes Bunting, reck less operation, capias. Elbert A. Kirby, failure to give proper hand signal, nol prossed with leave. Vernon Wescott, public drunk ness, continued. W. E. Bellamy, drunken driv ing, no operators license, posses sion. Guilty of operating with no drivers license and possession of tax paid whiskey with seal broken. Not guilty of drunk dri ving. Fined $50.00 and costs. TENANTS ELIGIBLE Continued From Page One County PMA Committeemen chairman, "because we do not have the names of most tenants and sharecroppers in Brunswick county, and are therefore nofabl# to mail information and notices about the referendum to them directly." The chairman explains that al though community referendum committees will use registers of eligible voters as a guide to vot ing eligibility, any person whose name does not appear on the register will be allowed to cast a ballot if he believes he is eligible t6 vote. Such ballots may be "challenged," however, if the per son is unable to prove that he had an interest in a cotton crop in 1948, and eligibility will be determined by the County PMA Committee before such ballots are counted. TELEPHONE SURVEY Continued From Page One noted for the extremely fine ser vice it gives its subscribers. At least, taht has always been the case at Southport. Dr. Ft. H. Holden of Holden Beach and Shallotte, stated this week that if there was any possibility of getting the Bell Company to Holden Beach in a reasonable length of time, it would be best for the beach to wait for such an opportunity. However, they can hardly afford to pass up any real chance without assurance. NAME TAX LISTERS' < Continued from page one) taxes. Henry L. Anderson was re lieved of taxes since 1946 on a piece of land condemned by the U. S. government. L. C. Bland was granted permission to segre gate a portion of the Nettie Bland Estate land and pay the pro rate taxes due. The D. S. Hoover land was ordered sold to D. L. Mercer for $250.00. BAPIST ASSOCIATION Continued Prom Page One Fred Gore, Ernest Gilbert, Isaac Willetts. Visitors at this meet ing were: J. S. Knowles; Tom Johnson; W. R. Morehead; Dennis Hewett; Earl Helms. It was carefully explained that group hospital insurance is not a source of revenue for participat ing churches, but that it makes it possible for many individuals to secure coverage under a policy which might otherwise be denied; and it reduces the cost of hos pital insurance of all who jo^i under this group plan. OWNER SHOWING (Continued from page one) miles of especially nice beaches. It is a place that could be fil led with attractive year-round homes. It is believed that it would fill with such people and in addition would draw thousands of visitors annually if a start of some sort was only made. Once this was done, ways and means would quickly be provided to make the place more accessible. The general belief is that with facilities on the island for tak ing care of people the matter of providing a ferry for transporta tion would be quickly snapped up by private interests if the dev elopers are not interested in that angle. With the newr paved River Road from ?Wilmington to Southport and the rapid development of Long Beach, Caswell Beach and Fort Caswell, a ferry running Southport to Bald Head, via Fort Caswell, should be a profitable business. FISHING CYCLE MAY BE (Continued from page one) Company remained in operation at Southport. It, too, would probably have been abandoned if fish meal had not become an improtant pro duct, largely replacing the oil in | value. With fish meal as a product ' the factory was able to weather ! things, despite the main fish pro- j ducing centers developing further j east. Fishing in the spring and j summer became important, des- 1 pite the fact that there was little j or no oil. For a number of years | there was still a small run of fish with oil, coming as far down the coast as Southport and then fad- , ing out into the ocean. This finally ceased and for a 5 number of years the oil production at Southport was low, practically all of it being taken from fish caught in the Beaufort area in November. During the past year's there > has been a steady increase in the 1 number of fish to be caught off 1 Southport during the spring and I summer. Employing mostly local men, the pay roll for, boatmen and factory workers has become a very valuable one to Brunswick county and the factory has stead- j ily sunk large sums in expanding j building and equipment and in ; bigger and more efficent boats. Even with approximately a , hundred thousand dollars having been spent on factory enlarge- j ments last winter, during the past | summer the factory could hardly keep up with the production of j the six boats. The concensus of opinion a mong the fishermen is that the fish are returning to Southport. Instead of the production mount ing along the coast to Delaware, it is said to be falling off as it mounts here. This year .there is said to have been a very notice able decrease in the eastern pro duction and that, according to local opinion, means more fish at Southport next spring and sum mer. It seems that a decade or more ago the factories in the east caught about all of the roe men haden. Few got south to spawn and there was consequently few local fish during the spring and summer. During the past several years, the fishermen say, the schools of roe menhaden, forming all of the way to Delaware, have become in creasingly shy and expert at dod ging the fishermen and their nets. Instead of traveling on the sur face of the Water ,or near it where they could easily be spot ted, the roe menhaden have been ranging wide and deep. They travel further offshore or else go deep, when they cannot easily be seen. As a result they get thr ough the blockades. At least many of them do. They get down the coast and Southport is be coming a spawning ground and is getting a yearly increase in its local summer fish. Captain J. B. Church said this C. W. Davis Co.
