Complete School (Continued From Page One) compared to 8.9 for North Carolina. The percent of the population completing less than five yeasrs of school was 23.7 for Brunswick County and 16.5 for North Carolina. Fifty-five and one-tenths percent or 2,524 families in County had incomes of $2,999 «jr less according to the 1960 Census information. Twenty-three and eight-tenths percent or 1,092 families had incomes ranging between $3,000 to $4,999. Ofie hundred nineteen families or 2.6 percent had incomes of $10,000 and over in 1960. ' SCHOOL FINANCE The date of the last revaluation was 1967. The Brunswick County legal maximum bonding capacity in 1970 was $3;703,216. The county had a bonded indebtedness on September 30| 1970, of $2,740,000. Ihe present (1970) bonding capacity is $963,216. During 1970 there were 5,947 students in average daily membership with a taxable property valuation of $12,454.06 per student Tbe total county tax rate in 1970-71 was $1.90. The schools received 50.5 percent of the tax rate with 49.5 percent going for purposes other than schools. The tax rate increased from $1.60 in 1965-66 to $1.90 in 1969-70. The percent of the tax dollar being used for schools has increased from 37.5 percent in 1965-66 to 49.6 percent in 1969-70. Hie total amount expended for current expense has gradually increased from 1965-66 to 1969-70. The amount expended per pupil from federal, state, and local sources for current expense expenditures has increased from $357.58 in 1965-66 to $583.78 in 1969-70. The schools have grade organizations of 1-5 and 1-7 for elementary schools, 8-12 and 6-12 for high schools, and 1-12 for union schools. Three elementary schools and five secondary schools are accredited by the Department of Public Instruction. No schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. There are seven certified librarians in the Brunswick County schools. In Oc t o ber 197 0, Brunswick County operated 82 buses transporting 5,210 pupils. The largest number of buses serving one school was 30 serving the Shallotte School, and the smallest number was 9 buses serving Lincoln School. A summary of high school graduates revealed that 19.1 percent of the 1970 graduates entered senior colleges or universities. There were 38.7 percent entering the labor market for the same period. The number of secondary course offerings ranged from 26 at Bolivia to 51 at Shallotte. Eighteen units of credit will be required in the 1971-72 school year for high school graduation. me county employs iweive special education teachers—nine for the educable, one for the trainable, one for speech and hearing, and one for exceptionally talented. Projections for student membership for the entire unit indicate a membership of 5,998 students in 1975-76. Projections of student membership for each of the three attendance areas show a larger membership than the projections for the administrative unit as a whole. The projection for 1975-76, based upon a grand total of all three attendance areas, is 6.276 students. The projected membership in 1975-76 for the three attendance areas is: Southern Attendance Area — 2105, Northern Attendance Area — 1415, Western Attendance Area — 2756. Two hundred thirty-nine professional positions are paid with state funds, 13 professional positions are paid with federal funds, and 22 positions are vocational which receive federal, state, and local funds. The pupil/teacher ratio by professional personnel ranged from a low of 1:17 at Brunswick County School to a high of 1:27 at Lincoln School. All schools received a sanitation rating in 1970. The ratings ranged from a low of 86.5 at Union to a high of 95.5 at Southport. All cafeterias received sanitation ratings during 1970. All cafeterias received ratings of 94 and above.
