ATTEND GRADUATION Mr. and Mrs. John Mc Millan and Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Parker have returned from a visit to Holly Springs, Miss., where they attended commencement exercises at Rust College where James McMillan and Joyce Parker Hewett were members of the graduating class. Dr. William McMillan, a native of South port, is president of Rust College. Phelps Boy Honor Grad Kermit S. Phelps, is a recent graduate of Frederick Military Academy, Port smouth, Virginia, where he finished as number two in his senior class of 44 students. In addition to serving as salutatorian, other ac complishments included membership in the Plainesman Rifle and Pistol Team, the National Honor Society, and the Tidewater Scholastic Team sponsored by the Ledger - Star newspaper. He was named Distinguished Cadet for several grading periods and honor Cadet for the entire year. He received no demerits during the year. He was awarded the Expert badge and ribbon in military marksmanship; a trophy for firing high pistol, and at tained the highest Military I grade with demonstrated leadership ability. He served on the annual staff and participated in the senior class play. Kermit plans to enter the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. Phelps of Southport. •Z Mrs. Edna M. Gause, left, and Mrs. Hazel M. Marlow, right, C; daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Willie J. Marlow, Ash, received degrees from North Carolina Central University, Durham, at the commencement exercises held on May 30. They both > completed their work in August 1970. Mrs. Gause received the v Master of Library Science Degree in Library Science. She is •Z Library Supervisor for Brunswick County Schools. She is the v wife of Thomas Gause of Supply and the mother of one v daughter, Kecia. Mrs. Marlow received the Bachelor of Science v Degree in Business Education. She is an instructor at Rice V Business College, Charleston, SjC. She is the wife of Sgt. Phil > Marlow of Charleston Air Force Base in Charleston, S.C. Batton Boy Is Graduated Cadet Roy Eugene Batton, son of Sgt. First Class (Ret.) and Mrs. Joseph H. Batton, Boiling Spring Lakes, was graduated from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, Saturday in a colorful ceremony. He received his diploma and a congratulatory handshake from Maj. Gen. James W. Duckett, president of The Citadel. During his careers as a cadet, Batton held the rank of second lieutenant within the South Carolina Corps of Cadts. He held membership in the Cordell Ranger Airborne Club, the Association of the U.S. Army, the English Club, the Baptist Student Union, and the Summerall Guards — the elite precision drill platoon. Upon completion of Summer Camp, Batton will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He majored in English and was awarded the A.B. degree. New Birth Mr. and Mrs. James H. Ward announces the birth of a daughter, Tonya Lynn, bom May 21. They live in Durham. Film Short Is Being Shown The 10-minute theater version of “North Carolina, The Goodliest Land,” will be shown this summer to movie goers across the State, as well as South Carolina and Virginia. “We are extremely pleased that ABC Southeastern Theaters have agreed to use this film as a short subject,” said Chuck Barbour, Director of the Travel and Promotion Division of the Department of Conservation and Development. “This exposure will be especially timely in that it will coincide with our Ex plore North Carolina program.” ABC Southeastern operates 59 theaters in 31 principal cities located in the three state area. This exposure is in addition to nationwide distribution of the film which is being handled by Modern Talking Pictures.
