The Way It Was This photograph looks like it might have been made around Southport last week. Asa matter of fact, it was taken in the Southport area, but 40 years ago. That was when the Intracoastal Waterway, the inland passage from New York to Florida, was dredged. This is a scene of one of the dredges of the R.C. Hoffman Construction Company at work on the canal at Swain's Cut near Lockwood Folly Inlet. Board Learns Continued From Page On* on a coordinated effort by all local agencies and parents. The board handled several matters of business at the special meeting, including the employment of the following teachers: Sarah F. Lee, Leland; Emily G. Gore, Shallotte; Sally Kirby, South port; and Alma H. Beckett, special art teacher who will be assigned to several schools in the Brunswick County system. The board authorized the allocation of funds to begin ten occupational education programs during this school year at a total cost of $2,500. The board also authorized an agreement with Carolina Power and Light Company and Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation for security lights at the new consolidated high schools. Also, the board okayed the purchase of Title I audio visual equipment and films. County Voters Continued From P«*» One Republican Jerry Scott, but there is an uncertain factor on the national level that could change that — and also affect the outcome of any close Democrat-Republican contests. AND FOR PRESIDENT... Polls give the Democrat George McGovern-Sergant Shriver ticket virtually no chance to unseat Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew as president and vice-president; the strength of the expected Nixon-Agnew victory could carry with it other contests on the county, district and state levels. One race already has been decided. Ray Walton of Southport and Giles Clark of Elizabethtown, both Democrats, were unopposed in the primary and face no opposition next Tuesday for the District Court seats. The two judges have served the Brunswick-Columbus-Bladen district the past four years. Town Park Continued From P«ffe On* proposed tennis, basketball and shuffleboard courts have not been built, nor has the children’s playground. Now the town needs to know if the grant is still effective. Jack L. Bailey asked the council to consider giving him a 99-year lease on about four acres of land owned by the town near the Elizabeth River Marina. Bailey said he hoped to build a 100-unit dwelling there with facilities to the water. Mayor 0. G. Coleman said the board would consider the matter. Continued From Page One president and executive director of Learning Foun dation of Winston-Salem, a regional tutoring center. Previously she was a teacher in public and private schools of Forsythe Coutny. Her political credentials include being vice-chairman of the Republican State Executive Committee, a position which she still holds. Last year she demonstrated both her determination and her ability to fill a position which never before had been held by a woman when she served for several months as state chairman for the Republicans. This brought on a breach with Frank Rouse, who took a leave of absence to help in the Jim Gardner primary campaign, but Mrs. Rohrer says she and Rouse, who is back in his old job, are able to get along very well to gether. Mrs. Rohrer is a small, pretty brunette. She is a widow and has three sons, ages 14, 20 an 22 years. On her trip around South Waterfront We almost lost our bird dog this week when he was chasing a squirrel and forgot to stop before he had climbed a tree. Of course, a dog can’t climb a tree but this one got so excited he didn’t know it. There was a pile of debris near the base of the tree and low growing limbs about two feet above the point. The dog jumped and made it, but that was the end of the road for him. The squirrel continued to the safety of the taller branches, leaving the dog swaying precariously on the limb. Thatdidn’tlastlong. He lost his balance and hit the ground like a load of bricks. He got up, shook his head groggily, then trotted over to his pen. He may have temporarily lost his appetite for chasing squirrels. Monday was a beautiful day and as we looked out over the river early in the morning we caught sight of a couple of beautiful yachts headed for the Intracoastal Waterway as it heads west. And then we Ronald J. Tyman has been named assistant vice president of Waccamaw Bank and Trust Company at Southport and manager of the Consumer Credit Depart ment, a new position, ac cording to Robert Howard, Waccamaw vice-president in charge of the Southport of fices. port and other points in Brunswick County she was accompanied by Linda Packer, a leader in the young Republican movement in Brunswick County. To My Friends In Brunswick County. . . This is the first year that Brunswick County and Pender County have been paired as a district from which to elect a member of the House of Representatives. This means that I have had to spend most of my time in Pender, where the people do not know me. I"want to fake this last opportunity to tell my friends in my home county that I have not been taking them for granted. I need your help and I will appreciate your help. You know me and what I stand for. You know that I can and will work with the next State Ad ministration for the best interest of the citizens of my district. I thank you for your vote and support. Jimmy Prevatte For House of Representatives Brunswick and Pender Counties' caught sight of another yacht, only the people aboard this craft probably were not paying much attention to the beauty of the morn. Their boat had gone aground near the No. 1 beacon and they were waiting — and hoping — for the high tide to float them free of the mudbank where they were stuck. This lady called and said she had a sick seagull in her back yard and what should she do about it? We told her to call Game Protector Joe Newman, whose main Job is not protecting seagulls but who might know what to do. She did and Joe wasn’t home, so we don’t know what ever happened to the invalid scavenger. Later we saw Joe and told him we had referred the call to him. He said he has no special category for sick seagulls, but that strangely enough this is not the only case he has reported. “The last one wasn’t really sick,’’ he explained, “lie was just badly injured. I don’t even think it had been shot, but something had torn off one wing and he had lost a lot of blood. Frankly, I thought the kindest thing to do was to dispatch the bird, which I did as soon as I got him out of sight of the person who had called me in the first place.” James H. Bryant of Supply, employed in the Security Division of the Directorate of Safety and Security at Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, has been selected Parent Teachers Association Member of the Month for September by the Parent Teachers Association magazine, the official magazine of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers. Bryant first began work at Sunny Point in 1958 and has been employed continuously since that time. Col. Charles H. Sunder, the Sunny Point commander, and Bryant examine the magazine article pertaining to Bryant. *x-x-x<vxv*x-x-x-x-x-x-xv*x-x-x-x*x-x-x-x*x-x*x-x*x-x-x*x*x*x-x-xttw-x-xvx*xvxvx*x' (MMeaU*.) Nick Galif icmakis will help the South keep control of the United states Senate. Southern Democrats currently control the key committees—and the key to power—in the United States Senate. National Republicans are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in several states—including NORTH CAROLINA—in a frantic attempt to wrest control from Southern Democrats and put it into the hands of Republicans from the North and West. If the scheme should succeed, the voice of the South would be hushed in the Senate. Here's where the key chairmanships would go: Current Chairman: Senator Sam j. Ervin, D-N.C. Government Operations Committee Senator Herman Talmadge, D-Georgia Agriculture & Forestry Committee Senator Russell Long, D-Louisiana Finance Committee Senator James Eastland, D-Mississippi Judiciary Committee Senator John Sparkman, D-Alabama Banking Committee Senator J.W. Fulbright, D-Arkansas Foreign Relations Committee Senator John Stennis, D-Mississippi Armed Services Committee Senator John McClellan, D-Arkansas Appropriations Committee Would be replaced by: Senator Charles Percy, R-lllinois Senator jack Miller, R-lowa Senator Wallace Bennett, R*Utah Senator Roman Hruska, R-Nebraska Senator John Tower, R-Texas Senator George Aiken, R-Vermont Senator Margaret Chase Smith, R*Maine Senator Milton Young, R-North Dakota ’ Nick Galifianakis will provide moderate representation in the U.S. Senate that is in the true tradition of the South. Senator Ervin wants Nick beside him in the Senate. The people of North Carolina need Nick to provide positive leadership for all our people. And the South needs Nick to keep the Voice of the South alive and active in the United States Senate. Let's send Nick to the Senate. Action speaks louder than words.
