Project Fitness has youths running, jumping By Marybeth Bianchi Feature Editor National and statewide studies in dicate that children are becoming more sedentary and less physically fit, but one Brunswick County school official says he has seen an improvement in students’ physical achievements. The ninth annual Project Fitness field day tested students’ athletic abilities in 12 different events. Stan dards for achievement were set early in the year and students were given opportunities to challenge those standards to represent their school in countywide competition. One stu dent from each school was selected for each elementary and middle school age group, while two were selected for each high school age group. Nelson Best, physical education supervisor, said the scores in many of this year’s events were better than they had been in the past. "It has become quite a competi tion, but it’s a wholesome competi tion," he said. A new event, the vertical jump, was added to the high school events for students ages 13 and up. When total scores for all events were tallied, North Brunswick High School was the winner with 72 points. However, the other two high schools weren’t far behind. South Brunswick had 69 points and West Brunswick 53. Southport Elementary, Bolivia Elementary and Union Primary tied for the top spot for the competition among the seven- and eight-year olds. Shallotte Middle was the high scorer in the nine- and ten-year-old range, while South Brunswick Mid dle took the honors in two age groups: 11- and 12-year-olds and 13 and up. Project Fitness field day was hosted by North Brunswick High School. Winners, in first through third places, were as follows: Cultural arts South Brunswick High School will present its Cultural Arts Night on Thursday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.
