TEEING OFF Head-on-pillow drill Head movement is not so much a problem with | the head, but with the body I movement that can I accompany it. This drill will I teach you to keep the head f still, while being able to swivel the chin. ■ Place a pillow against a wall. ■ Stand comfortably back from the wall. ■ Assume your address position. ■ Pretend to hold a club while pressing your head against the pillow (1). ■ Make a practice swing (2, 3). ■ You will feel your torso and shoulders swivel around your backbone. ■ Your backbone also cannot dip down or raise up. Clubs represented were Brick Landing, Brierwood, Carolina Shores, Fox Squirrel, Oak Island, Olde Fort, Sandpiper Bay and Sea Trail, with 73 women participating. Kay Brannon of Oak Island again lead the field with 77, followed by Kitty Smoker of Sea Trail with a 79. Low net honors in the championship flight went to Betty Holt of Olde Fort with a 64; second low net was Doraleen Joyner with a 66 and low putts (33) Bronza Kiger, both of Olde Fort FIRST FLIGHT - low gross, tie between Bobby Maples of Brierwood and Mary Wieloch of Olde Fort, 82; second low gross, tie between Ellen Parker of Oak Island and Nancy Rosenkrans of Olde Fort, 87; low net, Frankie Dawson, Oak Island, 68; three-way tie for second low net between Sherry Pittman of Olde Fort, Mildred Thomas of Brick Landing and Florence Greene of Oak Island, 69. Low putts was won by Marge Gallop of Sea Trail. Seniors golf event May 21 Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor its third tournament of the year at Lockwood Golf Links on Thursday, May 21. Players are encouraged but not required to make up their own foursomes. Sign-in is at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start is 8:30 a.m. Players can sign up by calling Kay Brannon, 278-9409. The cost is $25, which includes cart and greens fees, prizes and lunch following play. The field is limited to 144 players. No games more than a week old will be published.) Majors INDIANS 15, BARONS 6 The UCB Indians defeated the Bishop Realty Barons 15-6 on Monday, May 4. The Barons led 4-0 after one inning and 6 1 after two before the Indians rallied for six runs in both the third and fourth frames and added two more in the fifth while holding the Barons scoreless. The Indians collected seven hits, including three by Kevin Brown, two by Joel Reibert and one each by Jon Price and Chris Coughlin. Price had a double and two RBI, Brown a double and a RBI. Troy Stewart and Tony Butler had the two Baron safeties. The Indians made seven errors while the Barons committed only one. Reibert started on the mound for the In dians and walked six while giving up both Baron hits. He fanned four. Coughlin relieved in the third and gave up no hits in his three innings of woric while fanning five and walk ing but one to claim the victory. For the Barons, Stewart started on the mound and went three innings in taking the loss. He fanned one and walked three. Jason Frick gave up a hit and three walks in his third of an inning before Aaron Bishop fin ished the contest. He walked four, fanned three and gave up a lone safety to the Indians. BLUEJAYS 13, LONGHORNS 6 The Bluejays scored four times in the bot tom of the first and were not challenged again as they defeated the Longhorns 13-6 last Wednesday, May 6. The Bluejays, ahead 4-2 after the first frame, scored five more times in the third to go ahead 9-2, then saw the Longhorns move to within 9-5 before adding four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Hie Longhorns oulhit the Blucjays, how ever, 9-8. For the Longhorns, Wesley Barnett had two triples while B. J. Williams and Bryan Ledbetter added doubles. For the Blucjays, Jon Wilson had two hits including a double and Jamie May added a pair of singles. May had four RBI and scored twice himself. Brad Schrader went the distance on the mound for the Bluejays, striking out ten while issuing six free passes. Travis Swain started and took the loss for the Longhorns; in three frames he allowed five hits while walking four and fanning six. Justin Ganruth pitched one and a third in nings, allowing three hits and five walks while fanning two. Bryan Ledbetter finished, pitching two-thirds of an inning, walking one and striking out one. INDIANS 8, LONGHORNS 5 The UCB Indians defeated the Western Sizzlin' Longhorns 8-5 Friday, May 8. The Indians jumped in front 5-1 after two innings of play but watched as the Longhorns tied the game 5-5 with two runs in each of the third and fourth frames. Three runs in the top of the fifth spelled the difference for the In dians, as the Longhorns failed to score in ei ther of their final two at-bats. The Indians collected four hits and com mitted two errors. The Longhorns had but three hits and one error. For the Indians, Kevin Brown had two hits including a triple and was credited with two RBI; Chris Coughlin and Sarah Chism each had singles, with Coughlin registering an RBI. Single-hitters for the Longhorns were Eric Dickerson, Curtis Grainger and Joshua Cumbee. Kevin Brown started for the Indians and went two and a third innings, allowing one hit, fanning five and walking four. Joel Reibert, who got credit for the win, relieved and pitched two and two-thirds innings, al lowing two safeties while fanning five and walking seven. Chris Coughlin wrapped it up, Dan West captures Oak Island’s 5-mile Dan West was first over the finish line in the annual Oak Island Five Mile Run. West completed the race in a time of 27:50.8, and also finished first in his 40-49 age bracket. Jeff Watkins finished second and Rex Whaley was third overall. Both also placed first in their age categor ies: 20-29 and 30-39, respectively. Chris Meyers was the top female competitor, completing the course in 30:54.1. Debra Caviness was second overall and Colleen Winzeler was third. Other winners were: “ Men, age 19 and under, Christopher Barnhart (32:08.0), Ben Wright (32:28.6), Shane Richardson (34:24.5); women, Colleen Winzeler (35:30.1). Men, ages 20-29, Jeff Watkins (27:50.8), Fred Rich (30:28.4), Donald Moore (33:58.2), Stephen Shea (34:39.3); women, Chris Meyers. Men, ages 30-39, Rex Whaley (30:16.1), Bill Fairley (30:25.8), David Bartlett (32:49.3), John Win zeler (35:44.1); women, Debra Caviness (32:49.0), Cindy Parker, (42.51.8). Men, ages 40-49, Dan West, Michael Murphy (35:27.9), Roy Murray (35:31.7), Frank Sasser (35:35.2). Men, age 50 and over, Bob Wil Cougars, 5-4 South Brunswick defeated visiting South Robeson, 5-4, Tuesday night in a Waccamaw 2A contest. Bret Tabor singled home the win ning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh. Lewis Vaught, who came on to pitch with one out in the top of the final inning, got credit for the win. Mike Clewis went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI, while Mike Brogan had a 2-for-4 night at the plate. The Cougars collected 11 hits. South Robeson led 4-2 after five innings but South Brunswick rallied for two runs in the sixth to tie the game and set up the last-inning heroics. AA League PIRATES 16, BEARS 15 The Hughes Brothers Pirates scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning to edge the KFC Bears 16-15 in an AA league game. The Pirates led 5-3 after one inning, 10-8 after two and 15-13 after three frames. The Bears scored twice in the top of the fourth to tie the score before the Pirates pulled out the victory. Will Osiek was credited with making an unassisted double play. MOOSE 19, SEAGULLS 14 The Moose defeated the Seagulls 19-14 in AA league play Monday, May 4. The score was tied at 10-10 after two in nings before the Seagulls took a 12-11 lead after three frames. But the Seagulls scored only twice in their final al-bal while the Moose tallied eight times. Matthew Frink and Brian Kosiewska had home runs in the last inning. MOOSE 17, BEARS 14 The Moose defeated the Bears 17-14 in a AA league game played Friday, May 8. The Moose jumped to a 5-0 lead after one inning and lead 11-5 after two. The Bears narrowed the gap to 12-10 after three frames but the winners held off the challenge in the final frame, oulscoring the Bears 5-4 for the final margin. Victor Heenan was credited with three putouts at third base and also collected three hits. Anthony Harvell had three hits and scored three runs. LEPRECHAUNS 23, PIRATES 10 The Leprechauns defeated the Pirates 23 10 in AA league play Friday, May 8. Matthew Evans and Michael Cotney had home runs for the Leprechauns, while Tina Jackson was credited with a double play for the Pirates.
