Each week, aluminum cans from the hospital are taken to the airport by hos pital employee Tim James. At the end of the school year, all cans col lected at Cans for Kids receptacles countywide will be redeemed and proceeds will be divided equally among graduating seniors. Health screenings offered for seniors Free health screenings for older adults offered by the Center for Successful Aging at New Hanover Regional Medical Center will be held at the Long Beach Recreation Center on Wednesday, November 1, and at the Southport Senior Citizens Center on November 27 A screening also will be held November 13 at the Leland Community Building. All screen ings will be conducted between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The following screenings will be Business of art to be discussed Artists, craftsmen and small busi ness owners can learn more about “The Business of Art” in a day-long workshop Thursday, November 9, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Brunswick Community College’s Small Business Center. Arts marketing consultant, Libby Platus will cover j topics such as I goals, attitude, i marketing tools, image, pricing, locating sales out-1 lets, publicity, mar keting action plans PLATUS and ldentitytng customers. "Marketing your art can be as cre ative as making art,” Platus said. “These presentations are designed to show how to market a work and how to get maximum publicity from a small budget with a little imagina tion and effort.” Pre-registration is required for the workshop and the registration fee is $5. The geriatric team from the Center for Successful Aging will conduct the screenings. Included on the team are a geriatrician, nurses, a pharma cist, nutritionist and social worker. Barbecue, yard sale will benefit animal center A barbecue and yard sale will be held Sunday, October 29, 11 a.m. fb* 3 p.m„ at the Southport-Oak Island Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at St. Charles Place off Airport Road. The fund-raiser will help promote adoption of and provide care for homeless and helpless animals in the area. Barbecue dinners will be sold for $4.50 per plate and will include “Boyette Barbecue.” cole slaw, baked beans, hushpuppies, dessert and iced tea. Barbecue also will be available by the pound for $5. Entries may be submitted by hand only November 10-11, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., at the gallery. Works will be juried November 12; the show opens to the public November IS. All work will be judged in one of two categories. Two-dimensional works will include oil, watercolors, acrylics, mixed media and collages, not to exceed 64 inches in width or height, framed. Three-dimensional works will include sculpture and pottery, not to exceed 50 pounds. A $500 cash prize will be awarded for "Best of Show," and first-, second- and third-place awards in each category will be $200. $100 and $50. The exhibit of local artists is sponsored by the Associated Artists of Southport. Also on exhibit is the work of Southport Elementary School students in the Youth Gallery, and three featured artists: Jane Flynn, joyce Grazetti and Sharon Hams. The gallery is open daily Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The public is welcome to tour the facility and to purchase works of art and pottery produced by local artists.
