Rx for Excellence Foundation representative Dr. Lee Langston pre sents a check to Brunswick Community College Foundation president John Fazckas to establish an endowed scholarship in the name of John Carr Davis, former sheriff of Brunswick County. This is the sixth endowed scholarship the Rx for Excellence Foundation has established at BCC. ‘Heart walk’ offers us a healthy choice The American Heart Association will conduct a three-mile Healthy Choice American Heart Walk on Saturday, November 4, 9 a.m., start ing at Waterfront Park in Southport. Southport is among hundreds of cities in the nation in which millions of walkers are expected to collect donations to fund cardiovascular research. State.Port Pilot editor Ed Harper will serve as honorary walk chair man for the Southport-Oak Island area. “Most people think that heart disease and stroke are something you worry about when you’re older," Harper said. “But heart disease and stroke affect Americans of all ages. We need answers now, and research will help us get them.” The event is sponsored nationally by ConAgra Inc., manufacturer of Healthy Choice food products, and locally by United Carolina Bank, First Citizens Bank, The Brunswick Beacon, Subway and Wilson’s supermarket. Area businesses that have registered teams include Carolina Power and Light Co., United Carolina Bank, First Citizens Bank, South Brunswick High School Anchor Club, Tri-Tech, Security Savings Bank, NationsBank and Art Skipper Realty. RECREATION ‘Baker’s Dozen’ for children Children ages five through nine can be creative in the kitchen and learn to make simple dish es and snacks in a new program called Baker’s Dozen. The program will be held at the Long Beach Recreation Center every Thursday, 4:30 p.m., from November 2 through December 14. The cost will be $1 per session and pre-registration is required. Creative Kids are invited A Creative Kids program for children ages three through five will be offered Fridays, 10 a m., at the Long Beach Recreation Center. Halloween events at beach A Haunted Trail will be held at the Long Beach Recreation Center this Thursday, October 26, 7 to 10 p.m. There will be no charge for admission. Halloween carnivals will be held at the recreation center on Friday. Children ages five and under are invited to wear their costumes and join in a variety of games from 10 a m. (o noon, children ages six through 12 are invited to wear their costumes to the festivities from noon to 2 p.m., and persons of all ages are invited to attend the evening carnival from 6 to 8 p.m. For further information, persons may call 278-5518. Long Beach has a field day A Field Day for young people ages seven through 15 will be held at Middleton Park on Saturday, November 4, 10 a.in. Events will include the 50-yard dash, I00:yard dash, 300-yard run, softball throw, standing long jump and sack races. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each event for the following age groups: seven to nine, ten to 12 and 13 to 15. Manatee trip is scheduled A Florida trip to explore the world of manatees has been scheduled December 1-4 by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department. The guided tour will include opportunities for snorkeling. The cost is $125 per person if two share a room, $83.33 if four share accommodations. The deadline to register is November 1. Participants must be at least 21 years old. Town Creek aerobics class The Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a low-impact aerobics class at the Town Creek Community Building. Classes meet Monday and Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. There is a $ 15-per-month participation fee or a $3 drop-in fee. Line dance is being taught Southport Parks and Recreation Department offers line dance classes every Thursday, 6 to 7 p.m. The cost is $20 a month. Donna King is the instructor.
