Brunswick County District Court judge Ola Lewis Bray has received the Janet Barnes Memorial Lecture Series Award in Raleigh. She spoke to youths at Lynn Road Elementary School about staying in school. Bray is honored for youth lecture Brunswick County District Court judge Ola Lewis Bray has been awarded the 1995 Janet Barnes Memorial Lecture Series Award. The award is named in honor of a Raleigh student who was killed by a tornado as she lay asleep in her bed room. The 1988 storm also leveled a neighborhood K-Mart store. In Janet’s honor, her parents have established a memorial lecture series to help Raleigh area youths. This year’s recipient was asked to speak to third- to fifth-graders at Lynn Road Elementary School in north Raleigh. “I told them in elementary terms to stay in school,” said judge Bray, “to listen to their parents, to listen to their teachers and to their neigh bors.” The message judge Bray delivered emphasized that drugs and alcohol often lead to other problems for youths that end up before her in the juvenile court system. Using Barbie dolls, Barney and Power Ranger cartoon characters to stress her mes sage, judge Bray told the youths on November 9 to follow the right advice to help them reach their goals. Wake County’s academically gift ed counselor Wanda Sutton nomi nated judge Bray for the series after she read a newspaper article on Bray’s appointment to the bench in the 13th Judicial District, which includes Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen counties. She became the youngest judge in North Carolina ever appointed by a governor. Retail/Wholesale Fuel Distributors Home Heating Fuel • Gasoline • Fuel Oil • Kerosene P.O.
