The Asheboro Couiier PRICE ONE DOLLAR A YEAR Wm. C. HAMMER, Editor. "Entered at the ir'ont Office at Albcboto eoond C.uw Matter. UNDERPAID, BUT . DESERV ING. The army of humble serva.ts of the Divine Master who are in a large measure responsible for the spiritual welfare of the public, are more poorly paid than the ordinary day laborer. Men who preach regularly, Bolemnize marriages; those who perform the sad fuuera rites over the bier of our departed loved ones, are not properly ap predated, and the small pittance paid them is scarcely sufficient to keep soul and body together; with the small compensation allowed, there is nothing over and above the bare necessities of life. There re mains nothing for the education of the children and the improvement of the mind. We pay more for the carpenters aud bricklayers who build our houses and these who work i:i our shops and mills: we p.ty more to those who work ol our roads and dig our ditches, than we do to those who look after the spiritual welfare of the community. liecentlv we have had much to say on the poor pay of the te. cher. aud have said that no other elms of our citizenship is paid so little, except possiMy the ministers of the gospel. Whik' biicklayers, ordin ary day laborers, factory hands and domestic servants receive more than the teachers in our schools . who look after the important matter of moulding the minds and educating the children who are to become th citizeus of the future generation, yet an investigation shows that, 'leaving out the pastors of city churches, the ministers of the gos pel in North Carolina who have regular work nceivc even less cum per.sation than do the teiclnr-s in our schools. .1mii);;iiiii;t New.
