MERCHANTS MEET. State Association of Retail Mer chants at Greensboro. FREIGHT RATES IN NORTH CAROLINA DISCUSSED. Enthusiasm At Kach Session Strong Speeches By Men Who Have Studied The Situation CloselyComparative Figures. The North Carolina Retail Mer chants' Association was in session at Greensboro last week. The meet ings were marked by enthusiasm and the topics discussed were of greatest imporatance to the commercial pro gress of the State. The Associa tion convened Tuesday, Mayor, Brandt extending a cordial welcome to the members which represent the State's most wide-awake merchants. On the part of the local association a welcome address was delivered by H.C.Huntley. These were lespond ed to by L. L. Leary, of Edentou. The principle discussion by the association was freight rates in North Carolina. Speeches were made by J. S. Manning, of Durham; Speaker E. J. Justice, of Greens boro, and State Senator J. Allen Holt, of Oak Kidge. MIL .MANNING' AMiKESS. Mr. Manning spoke lirst. His speech was broad and comprehen sive. Referring to discriminating rates he cited Yirgit.ia, the topogra phy of which is about the same -di North Carolina. The mileage is almost 'he stnie, yet the gross earnings of the roads in Virginia in one year are $;!!, :5i;, 12!), as against $1 .;, ll4 heiv showing that the low raU-s encourage traflic. Virginia is building up a big wholesale business because job bers can ship to points in North Carolina cheaper than a North Car olina jobber can ship the same goods to the same place. The rate from Greensboro to Hamlet is 71.1 cents on lirst-class freight- and from Kick inoud to Hamlet (more than twice the distance from Greensboro to Hamlet) cents on the same class of freight. Kate from Newberu to Asheville is $1.35, and from Rich mond to Asheville 84 cents. The distance is the same. Eastern North Carolina and Western North Carolina cannot tiade with each other, but both must buy out of the state. ME. E. .1. JUSTICE. Mr. Justice made a number i f com parisons of freight rates in this state and Virginia, showing wherein Greensboro pays a higher rate for short hauls than many other states. He said the next legislature should increase penalties for demurrage and fail"re to deliver cars on private sidings 60 as to make it cheaper for the railroads to obey the laws than to violate them. In closing he urged upon the merchants the necessity of electiug men who are not influenced by the ailroads; not to nominate or elect men to office who ride upon passes or who were nominated in a conven tion where a large per cent, of the delegates rides on passes. l'KOF. J. ALLEN HOLT. Frof. J. Allen Holt spoke of he change that has come over railroad presidents. Instead of being so reticent as formerly, they are going about making speeches and trying to oppose the righteous indignation of a people who have been treated un fairly. The speaker in closing urged the merchants to keep up the fight; pub lic sentiment is with them and they are sure to win in the en J. The Merchants Association will meet at Charlotte next year. The new officers elected are: President, N. L. Crauford, Winston-Salem; Vice-'resident, J. N. McCauseland, Charlotte; General Counsel, N. 11. Johnson, Raleigh; Secretary, J. W. Carter.
