Manufacturers were busy, workmen ia demand. streets and shops were crowded, and everywhere pew buildings going up. Railroad e.n mugs as compared with 1872 showed a gratifying increase. Prices of commodities were hiffh. demand pretty ijooJ: everybody seemed to be making money." That reads like a statement that was made before the 1007 panic was precipitated a few weeks ago, but as a matter of fact it was written by the historian Rhodes on the situa tion just before the 18T:j pmic. History does indeed repeat itself. By the way a high protective tariff was in operation then as in 1893 and in 1907. So that, whatever, else it ntay be claimed for it, no body can say that a high protection tariff keenj off pauics. News & Observer. No. 8953. TREASURY DEPARTMENT. Text of the Lesson, Matt, ii, 1-12, and I Sam. vii, 1-13 Memory Varna, 10 12 and 12, 13 Golden Texts, Luke ii, 11, and I Sam. vii, 3 Commentary Prepared by Rtv. D. M. Staarna. Copyright, 1907, by American Press Aswclitioa.l Unwilling to omit either the Christ mas lesson or the one on Samuel, we will give a portion to each, taking the Christmas story first, and It may be that we shall find more connection be tween them than appears probable at first sight. They both refer to Israel and to rulers In Israel, and In both there Is the work of an enemy and de liverance therefrom. It Is high time that all teachers ev erywhere should very strongly em phasize the fact that the wonderful babe in Bethlehem was born "King of the Jews" and that it was predicted of Him that He should rule (or feed or shepherd) God's people Israel (Matt. IL 2, 0; Mlc. v, 2). Gabriel told Mary that ber Son should occupy tho throne of Ills father David and reign over the house of Jacob forever and that of His kingdom there should be no end (Luke 1, 32, 33), and this was In perfect ac cord with Isa. lx, 6, 7; Jer. xxlll, 5, 6, and all prophecy. The time of the long postponed kingdom' Is ever drawing nearer, and every prophecy concerning Israel shall be literally fulfilled. Let the Christmas mottoes this year be on these lines: "All Israel shall be saved," "There shall come out of Zlon the De liverer," "Upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom," "He shall b ruler In Israel," "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews" (Rom. XL 2G; Isa. lx, 7; Mic. v, 2; John six, 19). In con nection with the story of the wise men and their gifts, tell of the queen of Sheba and her gifts, then show from Isa. Ix and lxil and Zech. xiv that all nations shall jet bring gifts to Israel and go up from year to year to worship the king at Jerusalem; show how the effort of Herod, the enrthly king, to destroy the child King will be matched and far overreached by the fulfillment of Kev. xvll 14; xlx, 10, 21, tmt the Lamb shall overcome them, for ho la Lord of lords and King of kings. See God's care of the child Jesus by dreams given to the wise men aud to Joseph and take comfort from the precious troth that If we are In Christ His Father la onr Father and we are kept and cared for moment by mo ment (Isa. xxvil, 3). Let the gifts of the wise men lead us to ask ourselves by what gifts or devotion or self de nial or journoylngs we are proving our love to Ilitu, who, though He was rich, for our sakes became poor that we through His poverty might lie rich (II Cor. vili, 9). What is it to us that we have heard tho wondrous story of the great redemption and so many mil lions whom He also loves have never heard? Let all gifts be to Illm, to help make IIliu known, and not to those who do not need thorn. Turning to the lesson In Samuel, the heart of It seems to be. "Return unto the Lord with njjl your hearts, put j away the strange gods and prepare your hearts unto the Lord to serve Him only (verse 3). The people had relied upon the nrk of the covenant and not upon the Lord and had lost the ark In battle. The Philistines found that the nrk brought them more trouble than they wanted, so they returned It on a new cart drawn by two milk cows, which, contrary to nature, went away from their calves, which were shut up at home. The Philistines sent a golden offering, with the ark in a coffer by the side thereof. Without human guide or driver tho cows took the cart to Eethshetnesh nnd stopped In the field of n man enlled Joshua. The cart was used for firewood nnd the cows sacrlfleed as a burnt offering unto the Lord upon a great stone by which they had stopped with the cart. The Ud of the ark, the mercy Seat, was never to be removed but by the Lord's com mand, yet the men of Betbshemesh dared to disobey, and over 50,000 were slain. The law can only kill. Life comes by the mercy seat and the blood sprin kled upon It. The men of Klrjathjearlra were sent for, and they brought up the ark and put it in the limit e of Ablnadab In tho bill, setting apart Kleazar, bis son, to keep it, nnd it abode there twenty years (verses 1, 2), the tabernacle be ing still nt Phlloh, from whence Israel had taken the ark to battle. The Philistines were still oppressing Israel, but Israel was crying unto the Lord, so Samuel gathered them to MIz peh, and they had a time o' confession and fasting and prayer nnd pouring out their ,p Ufa before God, ns a sym bol cr which they poured out water, perhnps saying, as on another occasion. We are ns water spilt on the ground which cannot be .gathered up again" (II Pam. xlv. 14). While thus engaged the Philistines came against them, but Samuel offered a lamb for a burnt of fering nnd cried unto the Lord, and the Lord heard hlin. and He thundered so mightily upon the Philistines that they were discomfited nnd smitten be fore Israel. Thus the Lord again fought for Israel as He had dono so often and will again in days to come (Zech. xlv). Thunder Is in Job xxxvil, 1-5. called the voice of God. "uoa thnnilereth marvclouMy with Ills voice; great things doeth He which wc cannot comprehend." Some will find comfort In this passage from the toe: that He dlrscteth the lightning. AX things nro under Ills control. ml He Is a wall of fire roundabout li'S peo ple (Zech. 11. 5). a
