Swain who conducted the devotional exercises, couimecciug at 10 o'clock. The annual report of the Pi evi dent read, points from which were given in last week's Courier. R, Young, reaorts that Salem has the best fire record of any city in the United States, bor the past 100 years the lire losses have been only $3,000. The loss during 1908 has been only $100. Three Lynched. Three negroes lynched at Union City, Teun, Tuesday at noon, for the murder of Uputy Suen Jurmss, who attempted to arrest them for disturbing religious wor ship. Died Suddenly. T. A. At the close of the League Conference Wednesday night was announced that a telegram had been received stating that en.J.S. Cmr, of Durham, had contributed $2500 to the Q. F. C. endowment turn!. On Thursday the conference de cided to arrange at o-ce for the 1 tt.ee of 17.500 to bring the fund to 100 000, au which time Andrew Carnegie agrees to give 25.000. 1 he conterence also decided to urchase stock of the Christain ad- votaie placing it in complete con troi'uf the church. Keidnville, Wadesboro and Hick ory invited the conference to meet : .I..Mi next year and Hickory was designated by a vote of the con ference. 'he work of the church has been most tuccefsful during tbe pa&tyear. Hume and Little daughter Burned. The little three year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Junius Beaver, of High Point, was burned to death in their home which was destroyed by tire last Friday. All the household goods were destroyed.
