WHEREIN DEPENDENCE MAY BE HAD IN BRYAN BOYS AND BOYS As time goes by the Republican pa pers and assistant Republican papers that have been looking for sipns to back up their hopes and predic t ions that Colonel Bryan intends to antago nize President Wilson are beccminj? discouraged. Colonel Bryrn established his attitude quite clearly in his note to the German-Americans, and he h:i. since written no line nor has he deliv ered a word that, ,' would indicate a change from the position therein tak en. On the contrary,1 'there are in dications that Colonel Bryan intends to stand by Wilson and "the adminis tration through thick, and thin. In fact, the impression now prevailing in Washington, as we are told by the correspondent of the New York Post is that Colonel Bryan "will be among those hearty commending a renomina tion for the President next year, and that he will assist in the campaign on and off the stump. So far as known there is no difference between Mr. Brvan and the President except a dif ference of opinion as to the method to be pursued in bringing the Lusitan ia case with Germany to a conclusion. There have been a number of attempts by former friends of Mr. Bryan and by old-time friends to translate the resignation incident into a personal antagonism between the two men, but each attempt thus far has ignominous- ly failed. Leaders of the adminittra tion say all such attempts will fail, including the present attempt to put Mr Bryan in the hole on the one-term plank in the Baltimore Convention by making him appear inconsistent if he docs not try to hold Mr. Wilson to it." The Observer believes every word of this is the truth. It further believes that time will prove Colonel Bryan a man of square dealing with President Wilson and the Democratic party, however, impossible it may be at the present moment to fathom his conduct from the writing of his resignation. ' Whatever may, be, said of him, this paper expects that as Wilson's friend and admirer, he will prove steadfast and straight. Charlotte Observer. HINTS TO THE SANITARIAN The city sanitarian or food inspect or should be about the livest wire in town, especially during the summer months. Of course he must keep a watchful eye on the slaughter houses and meat markets to see that no dis eased or fly infected meat is sold' and that those who handle it have no in fectious disease. Especially careful must he be as far as the milk supply is concerned. There are many modes of infection in connection with milk lack of cleanliness in milking, in hand ling, in the use of impure water and in the effect of heat, that there is grave danger without the utmost care. Then there are food shops, and fruit and drink stands, to say nothing of the cafes and restaurants, that should constantly have the inspector's eye. , .- Various and unsuspected may be the modes of infection and the insan itary conditions of places and things. Even ice may carry infection. Freez ing does not kill bacteria. Perhaps most people think so. Artificial ice made from pure water in clean sanita ry factories is safe. But dirty-look-ing.cloudy ice may be infected as weH as polluted and should not come in contact with food or drinks. The greatest danger of ice becoming in fected is by improper handling by being dragged across dirty streets or sidewalks, or distributed by unclean hands. Ice should be washed in pure water and handled with clean hands when it is to be used in connection with food. That ice cream may he positively dirty never enters the mind of most people who are hot and thirsty and think they need 7-efroshing. That it is frozen seems to be the one requi site. As a matter of fact, ice cream in the average town is made of the very poorest quality of cream or milk, It is made usually in cellars or in oth er unsanitary places and is handled with the greatest lack of cleanliness. It is often re-frozen and sold. Then there is the question of flavoring and coloring matters. Upon investigation these have often been found to be im pure and injurious chemicals and not fruit juices as supposed. The sanita rian will find, upon investigating points of sanitary precaution. If flies are there, that is sufficient. They lo cate filth. ; Durham Sun. Sometimes we think that girls I change, and that men and women I change as the decades run on: but boys never change. They are the same yesterday, today and 'orcver They are the same whether late casts them down in China, New York or Patagonia. Styles inay change in girl.;, but as fur boys, never! They are the same today aa when Cain am Abel played leapfrog in the Garden of E.len. , Boys change as to dress, we'll ad mit. They used to go barefoot and wear patched trousers, and hats with the crown 'out. They don't do that any more that is, not may of them But it is the surroundings that have changed, not the essential boy . When you were a boy you nsed to steal the old gray mare out of the barn and go beating down the dirt road as fast as she could go to show the girl what a wonderful and fear less horseman you were. Now the old gray mare is dead, and the barn has given way to a garage. But the boy your boy steals the automobile out of the garage and beats it down the improved tiighway just to show the female of the species what a dar ing motorist he is. The elemental boy is there. He is no worse than you were and not much better. The boy of today is moved by the same motives as you were. He is govrned by the same impulses. He has his romances as you did and he "gets by" his work with just as little expenditure of real energy you did in the old days. Oh, of course you're willing to swear that there wasn't a lazy bone in your body, but we've got it straight from all the neighbors that there wasn't a lazier boy alive than you were. Of course you're all .right now an or nament to society, a shining light, and all that but your boy will be all this, too, when he is your age and has boys of his own. No boys never change. Girls may, and men and women may, but boys are all cast in the same mold. CHEROKEES IN SWAIN Two thousand Cherokee Indians. for the most part full bloods, are liv ing today in a corner of the North Carolina mountains, forgotten by the people of the east. These Indians, who are a remnant of the Cherokee tribe which many ysars ao-0 wav mov ed by the United States Government to old Indian Territory, own 63,000 acres of land in Swain county, N. C. They bought these lands with money allotted them by the government years ago, refused to west and had a com munity of their own. Commissioner Sells of the Indian Bureau has visited these Indians in recent weeks and has planned the es tablishment of new industries among them for their own improvement and development. It is .said that he is the first Indian commissioner to in spect personally the reservation and to discuss with the Cherokees them selves their problems. While the In dians hold 63,000 acres of land, it is not all tillable. Located in a beauti ful mountain country much of the land is rugged. The conditions for apple growing are ideal, and Com missioner Sells is going to get them to try this industry. HUERTA ARRESTED AGAIN Victoriana Huerta, one time dicta tor of Mexico, was put in jail ct El Paso, . Texas, , recently, in com pany with five other men arrested with him, on fresh charges of cpn spiracy to violate the neutrality of the United States. He was unable to 'furnish $15,000 bond, in addition to the bond of like amount tinder which he was released after his first arrest. He criticised deputy marshal Bryant for "anduis vigilance," and said, "had I not been placed in the circumstance I was, I would have shot him." FORGET IT If you see a tall fellow ahead of the crowd, A leader of . men, marching fearlcsi and proud, And you know of a tale whose mere telling aloud Might cause his proud head to in an guish be bowed, It's a pretty good plan to forget it. If you know of a skeleton hidden away In a closet guarded and kept from the day In the dark, whose showing, whose sudden display, Might cause grief and anguish and life-long dismay, It's a pretty good plan to forget it. If you knovof a thing that, would lessen the joy Of a man or a woman, a girl or a boy, That would wipe out a smile or the least way annoy A fellow.or cause and gladness tD cloy, It's a pretty good plan to forget it. Selected. fie Standard of fflueand Quajfy The Most Popular Six of The Year WE have been asked a great many times why the Paige "Six-46" has so overwhelmingly proved to be the most popular Six at any price on the market this year. Our answer to that is that we planned that very thing. We planned to accomplish it pri marily by putting the very maximum of quality into the "Six-46" and then selling it at the very minimum price $1395. Quality includes many vital elements. No better materials, no better principles of design and construction can be bought in any car $2,000 or $5,000 than we have put into the Paige "Six-46" for $1,395. You cannot buy more beauty and distinc tiveness of design, more luxurious seven passenger roominess, more power and flexi bility in the motor, rniore convenience and ease of control, more general motoring elegance than you buy in the Paige "Six-46" for $1395. You cannot buy greater ease of riding, more reliability in carburetion, ignition, elec trical lighting and starting and greater econ omy in the cost of maintenance and operation than you buy in the Paige "Six-46" for $1,395. You cannot buy in any motor car whether it cost $100 or $2000 more than the Paige a more complete combination of highest-grade features, making for motor-luxury and elegance, than you buy in the Paige "Six-46" for $1395. When the Paige adopts them, they are THE BEST. And the American people have realized that the Paige, in Quality as well as Price, is the Pioneer Six and has established new standards of Six values. The Paige "Six-46" has proven the most Popular Six of the year merely because it has proven the Supreme Value. See this world-famous car at your Paige Dealer's and you will understand why it is the Car of the Year. S. W, Presnell, Asiieboro, fl, G. Two physicians worked over me from four a. m. to 6 p. m. without giving me an. relief and then told me they did not expect me to live; that I had best telegraph for my family. Instead of doing so. For more than thirty years she had been blind, an affliction which she had borne without complaint. The funeral services were conducted at Shepherd Baptist church, on June 6, by Rev. Davis. PHe had always been faithful to attend church at Shepherd when in health. Truly she was a good woman and she will be missed. Everyone enjoyed going to see "Aunt Polly", as she was familiarly called. She professed re ligion about fifty years ago and lived a consistent Christian life ever since. She often expressed her readiness to go and live with Jesus, and in her last hours she said she had been waiting for the suramins and she did not see why he had been spared so long in this world of sufferin.
