A mill built by Rex Spinning Co., capital $500,000 at Raino, N. C. IMPROVEMENTS OF NORTH CAR OLINA FARMS AS COMPARED WITH THE VALUE OF THE ..CROP YIELDS According to Mr. J. M. Johnson, of the North Carolina Experiment Station, the improvements on the farms of North Carolina during the period from 1900 to 1910 was seven per cent, annually of the value of the crops produced during the year. , "According to the census of 110," says Mr. Johnson, "the value of the crops grown in North Carolina during the previous year amounted to $142, 890,192. The increase in value of farm buildings, equipment, and live stock on the farms was $102,672,412. This amount is 70 per cent, of the val ue of the one years crop as given above, and if we distribute this per cent, increase in value over the ten year increase in value, over the ten year period, it seems that the farmer has been able to put at lesat 7 per cent of the value of his crops into better equipment, more and better live stock, and improved farm buildings. Putting this money into these im provements is equivalent to making that much profit above his living ex pense. Not only has the farmer bet tered himself by improving his farm, but his land has increased in value during the same lenght of time about 142.5 per cent, or $202,209,105 so he has the value of this unearned incre ment in addition to the other profit. The other profit of 7 per cent, is not on total capitalization of his farm either but is on his annual earnings." THE TEST OF PROGRESSIVISM If Chauncey J. Hamlin of Erie coun ty and Theodore Druglas Robinson ol Hermiker have mrectly interpret the sentiment of the recent confe-nr of Progressives in this city, the n : third party, so far as New York State is concerned, is dead. Both are to recommend to their associates at home that they ally themselves with the Republicans, in the belief that Progressive principles may be carried a'ong by that organization. In all our political history we have never had a more noteworthy triumph of hope over experience. The Repub lican party in New York, as every where else, is the same in leadership, purpose and organization as it was when the Progressives were denounc ing it from a thousand stumps. It has professed no change of heart; it has embraced no new ideas. On the con trary, it is preparing for a reaction ary campaign next year that will make Mark Hanna's standpat enter prises of 1896 and 1900 look like an advance all along the line. ' I Circumstances have made the Dem ocratic party progressive. It has done the things that other parties, through treachery or lack of power, failed to ' do. It is in a position to go much further. True Progressives, abandon-' ing a separate organization, will not ally themselves with a party that ha bitually rejects new ideas when anoth er that is remarkably receptive of, them is at hand. The honesty or dishonesty of the Progressive movement of 1912 is to be determined not so much by the great moral precepts which it then laid down as by its actual political performances now and hereafter, New York World. BAS The Catawba Indians on a reserva tion near Rock Hill, S. C, are having a controversy among themselves rela tive to which among their number may participate in the $7,500 appro priation annually made by the State for their living expenses. As a result the State is considering cutting off the allowance. Some of them contend that if the father of a child born on the reservation be an Indian and the mother not an Indian, the child is not eligible to participate in the appro priation. The Catawbas claim the land on which the city of Rock Hill is built and also that upon which Winthrop College stands, and the State makes an annual appropriation for their liv ing expenses as a sort of compromise. Some of them have sworn they will "never work, for the State must sup port us". Beauty More Than Skin Deep. A beautiful woman nlu-nva Vv-ia trnnA digestion. Following we quote from it: "I was very glad to have a gentle man from Asheboro, Jonathan Steed, visit us last week. The day passed so quickly that it seemed almost a dream. He was pleased to see four teen head of good horses in my care and one of them the finest horse he ever saw, 25 head of fat cattle, 54 nice fat hogs, more than $1,000 worth of machinery on hand, about one-third of a crop of wheat and one-half cron of oats. WHEN THE FARMER COMES TO TOWN How do you greet the farmer when he comes to town? Is your greeting such that he feels that he is with us, but not of us? Or is he made to feel that he is in His town, among His people and with His friends? The making or the marring of this town depends greatly upon your at titude toward the farmer when he fa vors us with his visits. He is the backbone of the commu nity, and without his aid apd encour agement we would be an unsuccessful business community. The townsman is no better than the man from the farm, and the farmer can claim no superiority over the townsman. We e all human beings, with the same aims and purposes in life, and endowed with the same brands of in telligence. In fact, we are brothers of a com mon community, the only difference being that the one lives in town, where life is a little more diversified, while the other breathes God's pure air in the green fields of the country. Let us remember that we arc broth ers and sisters, and cousins and that the welfare of the one is vital to the success of the other.
