Oshkosh Housewife Duped Out Of Twenty Dollars By House-To-House Peddler Canvasser Represents Himself As Being Local Man And Makes Get-Away Given $20.00 To Change And Skips Chief Of Police Asserts That This Instance Should Serve As Warning A peddler who represented himself as being; a local man and evidenced familiarity with information concern ing Oshkosh people and local affairs succeeded yesterday in getting away with a $20 bill, given him by a west side housewife. Report was made to police immed iately after the incident, and Police Humorous Sketches From Ramseur Community Life -By V. C. MARLEY "Iat I-or lit The only man 1 ever heard of get ting ahead of Col. Jack Lane was Jim Purvis. After the war Col. Lane be gan to accumulate land in lower Ran dolph and Chatham counties, operating a grist mill, store and farming, lending money to small farmers of that sec tion on mortgages which they couldn t pay. until finally he owned about all the -urrounding lands of that section. He lived across the line on the Chath am side, but owned land in both coun ties. Jim Purvis was a one-mule farmer on Little Brush Creek, near lame's mill and wa.~ noted ‘.or his quick wit and fooli-hness ail over that end of the county. One year he wanted the colonel to' "run him through the crop season" at the store, securing the debt with wheat which he would sell later if the account was not paid oth erwise. Col. Lane, on one of the daily rounds he made on a good saddle horse, dropped by to verify Jim’s se curity, went to the grain house and saw several barrels of wheat "heap ing full," but didn’t examine closely any but the one barrel near the door. He was surprised to find later that this was the only barrel of wheat Jim Purvis had; the remaining barrels were empty, and turned bottom side up, with about a gallon of wheat each spread over the chime to look like full barrels. Thus; Jim Purvis fooled the colonel. Of course he paid the debt any way. “By Way Of Comparison” To emphasize the seriousness of ex treme high temperature. Dr. C. S. Tate said once: “I’ll tell you when a fellow’s temperature gets up to 106 it’s just fatal, that’s all. It just burns him up. No chance, no chance for him—and—if it should ever get to one hundred and seven—that’s dangerous! ’ One day Dr. Tate was commenting on a serious case he had treated and taken to the hospital for appendicitis operation, which was successful; “Yes, yes I’ll tell you George Vanderbilt ■wasn’t near as bad off as Kell Staley was, and Vanderbilt died!” “Eavesdroppers Never Hear Good of Themselves” One upon a time Ike Foust who loves to see other people work, slipped through the bushes to the edge of his eom field to see how some colored men were working, and they say this is what he heard one of them say: •‘Say nigger, efin Mista Ike don't go to hell de ain’t no use havin’ one.’’ “No Hear Seat Needed” We were recently amused at hear ing our good friend George Hicks re late an experience he had a few years ago while working near Greensboro. He and another workman were com ing in from work over about Brown Summit and a fellow picked them for a ride into town. Mr. Hicks declares that the man drove so fast that it was next to im possible to keep seated, as he was rid ing on the rear seat, or rather was supposed to be. He said he only hit the seat when they topped a hill; all the time between hills he was in mid air. He doesn’t think they came under about 85. After that he walked in. He was also telling one on the writer that I had forgotten, (Fact I had nev er heard about it before). Several years ago Tom Melton was here on a motorcycle from Georgia- As Chief Gabbert asserted the affair should serve as a warning- to others not to deal with house-to-house ped dlers who cannot show proper creden tials. The salesman was engaged in sell ing soap chips, incidentally at a price "about four times that of the local stores, according to the police report. Lacking change, the housewife ren dered credulous by the pleasant con versation of her visitor, who seemed so familiar with local events, gave him a $20 bill. The salesman accommodatingly agreed to take the bill to the corner store and return with the change. He never reappeared. It was asserted he gave a name and described himself as a resident of the southern portion of the city. — Oshkosh (Wis.) Daily Northwestern. the story goes; I rode down toward Siler City with him to put up some road signs, when on returning about five miles out we heard the station blow of Ramseur train. I remarked that I had to meet that train, and Tom said not to worry, so as the train roll ed into the yard we rounded the street corner at the station. Mr. Hicks states that Tom really did ride so fast that he couldn’t keep his eyesight up with him on a straight road view. “Free Advice" Several years ago some young men were discussing the advisability of g-etting married, and as Gene York was listening in on the conversation he said: “I wouldn’t advise you to do it, for since 1 got married 1 can't make a livin’ and work half the time.” “And I’ll Bet It Was Worth It" Back in the Cleveland days “Colum bia" got it’s mail from Staley and one of the carriers for a long time was that unique character, Will King, who is yet one of the youngest 74 year old men we have. It used to be the cus tom of all mail carriers to carry pas sengers for which they made a small charge. One night a stranger alighted from the train at Staley and inquired for transportation to “Columbia,” (now Rntseur), and was told that the mail man carried passengers. He found Mr.’ King and asked if he could go to Columbia with him. Mr. King agreed, and upon being asked how much he charged, told him he might go with him for a dollar and a half, collecting in advance. When the mail was made up Mr. King shouldered the bag and walked toward the suburbs of the village, ac companied by the salesman, who sup posed that the horse and buggy was nearby, however, after walking for some distance, and getting out into the country, he asked where the con veyance was, to which Mr. King re plied: “Oh, I don’t have one, I carry the mail on foot.” But if you know Mr. King you’ll agree that it was worth $1.50 to walk with him nine miles.
