Trains Crowded with Employes. St. Louis, July 10.—One person, a girl, was killei, four were seriously injured, at least one of whom will die, and a score slightly iiuvt in a v^rreck on the Terminal Kailroad association’s line between Granite City and Madi son, III., today. The dead girl, w'hose name is not known, and the slightly injuTed, were left in Madison, w'hile those more seri ously hurt w'ere brought to St. l.*ouis. Among the latter are: Frank Wink, both legs severed be low' the kne-j; will die. Everett K;;rtin. le^s broken. George Frye, feet ciushed and arm broken. Joseoh Stein, leg broken and ankle crushed. Most of the injured and the other passengers on the train were (em ployes of the Commonwealth Steel company at Ganite City, 111. The v.omen were employes of the National Enameling and Stamping company. Six hundrf^d workmen who were on thf^ wrecked train and anoth er inimoriiately following, returned tc St. Louis after the wreck. The terminal passenger train ■which left St. Louis at 8:25 a. m. consisted of nine coaches loaded with workmen ot factories of the rri-cities. jumped the track on a small trestle just north of the American Car and Foundry company’s ?heps at Madison. Carpenter Fractures Skull. Greenville. S. C., July 10.—While at v^-crk on the new' church building ot the Rutherford Street church Jesse Bell, a well known carpenter of thi? city, fell to the floor, fracturing his skun. He is still unconscious and his physiicans have no hopes for him whatever. Mr. Bell has a wife and two children. imm Jelks Pardons Many Convicts. Montgomery, Ala., July 10.—Execu tive clemency has been extended to five Alabama convicts by Governor Jelks. The pardoned prisoners were Wesley Rogers, of Crenshaw' county; Ben M. Carm.ack, of Morgan county; Anthony Lattimer, of Bullock county; Will Rasberry, of Chilton county, and Frank Jones, of Chambers county. Three Escape From Federal Prison at Johnson City, Kan. Junction City, Kans., July 11.—Gdl- bert Mullen, the federal prisoner, who led the mutiny at the Ft. Leavenworth prison in November, 1901, and who has been in the county jail here for the past year awaiting trial oa the charge of having murdered one of the guards in the mutiny, led an assault on Sher iff Peez .early today and he, with three others, a white man and two ne gro prisoners, escaped. The sheriff was overpow’ered and badiy cut on the head, but he succeed ed in .setting the cell door closed be fore all five prisoners could get out. The Quatette ran through the east ern part of town toward the river and compelling a fisherman to row' them to the old side, made for the thick timber. Tne sheriff followed in a buggy and posses were quickly organized and joined the chase. Later soldiers were sent over from Ft. Riley to assist in the hunt. Shortly before noon tw'o of the ne groes were capture.! and returned to jail. Sheriff Poez w’as badly inj^ired. but is still leading the search. Mul lens, who is a negro, is a desperate man ai;d it is expected he will put up a hard fight. In :he Fort Leavenworth outbreak 26 prisoners escajied, Mullens and nearly all the others finally being captured after a desperate fight in which Guard J. B. Key West, Fla., July G.—Fred Rw- art has l/ee>u convicted of murder in the first degree and will be sentenced to hang. Ewart was tried for the murder of Frank Whitaker. He made a full confession of the crime, claina- ing that ho li.ad invited Mr. Whitaker to go on board the New Venice to get some chims; that w’hile there Mr. Whitaker cursed him, and that while enrage.1. he (Ewart) picked up an ax and stiT.ck Whitaker with it.
