f The Toxaway Dam Secure. The Anderson Daily Mail says: S. M. Orr and family have i-eturned from a ten days’ camp- tour, in Sap|)hire country. T^i^y took the route by Walhalla Clayton^ down Tennessee val- and then went up Mud creek “The Flats, ” where they camp ed a couple of days, and then to Cashier’s Valley. While in the mountains Dr. visited the much talked of at Lake Toxaway and exam- ined it. When asked as to the pi'obable durability of the dam he plied: “The dam is built of clay and I’ock, and is very much the shape of a-V,’ The top of the‘V, ’or is about 485 feer lonjr. The bottom of the *V’ is about 100 foet. The width of the dam at the top is 22 feet and at the bot tom 260 feet. There is a layer of ♦Stone put in on the upper side of the dam 10 feet thick. There is also a layer of stone put on the iower side of the dam 8 feet thick. Over this rock is 18 inches of <*arth w hich has been sodded and makes a very pretty green ap pearance. There is a spillway the south side of the dam iibout 100 feet from the dam which is blasted out of solid I’ock, and is r>0 feet wide. This spill way is 12 feet lower than the dam. On the upper side of the dam a break-water has been built to overcome the effects of the waves, as it was found necessary to do this from the experience of last March, as the waves came nearly’ over the to}) of tiie dam at that time. This breakwatei* con sists of locust posts 12 feet lonj^ imbedded in the dam with strinjjr- <'i'S and spiling", and two inch boards driven dowMi in the dam. Since this breakwater has been built it has had the elfect of stop- j)in.ir ail the force of the waves on the dam. The water over the spillway comes too close to the dani at present, and Dr. Orr re- < oinmended to the eni^ineer that a wall of masonry be built 8 feet wide and 50 feet lon.ijf to carry this waste water entirely away i iom the foot of the dam which will be done at once as the rock has'already been blasted out of spillway and will be used for this In examinin"the bottom of the ! Loiils Locals. ^ I <lani it was discovered that more| water was goin,i>: fiom this })lace i Sylvan \ aJlov News: the dam nine and one half feet this little rise would not bother us much. During the last cloud burst, ’A’hichoccurred about June 6, and caused the water at Port- man to rise to the unprecedented level of nine and one-half feet, the large dam at Sapphire, which is on Horse Pasture river, and which is nearly three times as large as Toxaway river, did burst and come down on us. Now if Sapphire dam in addition to a water spout and cloudburst, did not hurt us, I have no dread whatever of the break in Toxa- wfiy lake, even if such a thing should happen. “I had read so much in the newspapers about this lake, and was interested so much from a financial point of view', that I was very anxious to examine it, and the result of my examination is that so far as Port man dam is ccMicerned I don’t care a cuss whether Toxaway dam bursts or not.’’—Ovonee News.
