No charge has ev er been or will be made for these two months—we were determin ed that none should be fooled in to taking a paper which they could not approv’^e. Our first few copies were issued without a paid advertisement of any kind and the entire income of the office for the first three months did not amount to slO. That was bS years ago this morn ing—the lirst Friday in Novem ber—and during those 8 years many changes have occurred. The business men of Brevard were wide awake to their own in* terests. and after experimenting have found out that adverti.sing is a great help on the road to busines success, and as a conse quence our pa])or now represents every business linn in town and several in other sections of the county. Every issue of the Np:ws has been a helper in leading our citi zens to better conditions. Its in tluence for all betterments has not been spasmodic, but continu ous from the start. The paper has been an advertisement for the county which has brought it credit both at home and abroad. At ]iresent there is not a county in the soutli with no greater pop ulation that has a paper to com- pa»-»' wliii the News in local wiite-u[»s or mechanical excel But what of the future? Du ring the year 1904 we hope to make the paper better in many ways tlian in the past, and in or der to start the year auspiciously we desiie to publish an extra edition of 5.000 copies the first ‘ 'i ida.y^ in January. In oi’der to o this we must have the assist- nce of every reader. We must lave engravings of our ])ublic ljuildings and public men, as well as cuts (jf our many waterfalls, mountain views and other at- ti-actions—and engravings cost money. The book paper for 5,- 000 copies v;ill be no small item, and extra help will be required. Every reader of the News who takes any interest in the future prosperity of the county can well afford to help pay for this edition. You can do so without feeling it simply by paying for the News next year in advance. Every pjesent advertiser can help by subscribing for 50 or 100 copies of the extra and sending them abroad. Every hotel and board ing house should send copies to all who inquire for board here next season. Every business man, no matter what his business may be, should advertise in it and let the world know what Bre vard is doing. Is our town and prise. Such a paper as we pro pose would open the eyes of cap italists to the chances for paying investments and would doubt less bring to the town a thousand times the cost of its publication. An extra edition has been talked of for the past three years—we are ready to undertake it now: are you ready to help bear the burden? Letter from t!ie Capital. Imitations of Royalty—“ Our Diplomacy.” Matchless Washington Correspondence of the Sylvan Vai.lky Xews. A little thing that is causing much comment hereistheatteinpt of the })resident, through his sec retary, Mr. Loe'*^. to ape tlie aii-s of the foreign courts. He is liav- ing his White House messengers clothed in uniform, and the re port is that the ushers and door keepers at the executive offices will be the next to don the uni form presci’ibed by Secretary' Loeb, with the tacit a})proval of President Roosevelt. As they outrank the messenger, the uni form is to be cut in more fash ionable style, and the other offi cials of the White House are to be more brilliantly attired so that the social function will match the gorgeousness of any foreign court. The White House will be made to blaze with all the glory and frippery and tinsel and gaudy display of the llunkies of Euro pean effete monarchies. These be republican times surely, and the people foot the bill. reading a book just published by an American traveler named Shoemaker, who describes his journey from Moscow to Port Arthur, in which he tells that Mukden is an interior city three hundred miles north of Port Ar thur. The explosion in diplo matic and naval circles that fol lowed this discovery can be more easily imagined than described. The demand for stimulants at the club, where the board of strategy holds its sessions, sur passed all previous records, and the pres dent and John Hay were nonplussed. The state depart ment having solemnl^^ by treaty, declared Mukden a *‘[>ort,” per sist in that declaration, but our naval heroes think it impossible to carry out the plans of the board of strategy, there being not enough water to float a canoe, much less a battleship, within miles of “the port.” The Chi nese have fooled our state de partment, ])robably at the insti gation of Russia, and “the o[)en door” to Manchuria is still shut so far as the sea is concerned, and our “matchless diplomacy” has received a check that the present ad ministration will never be able to overcome. ATLANTA, GA. MORGAN Wood & Iron WORKS Spartanburg, SASH DOOR.<; BLINDS S. C. KOUCH and DRESSED LL\A]]iEU The republican organs of the country have been beating the tomtoms and sounding the hew- gags about “our matchless diplo macy” that succeeded in obtain ing from China two “open ports” in Manchuria. One of these “ports” is named in the treaty as Mukden, and probably tlie peo ple of the United States would have gone on believing that our increasing trade was llowing through that open door if Russia had not objected to our having anything to do with that country. Our navy department thereupon decided that in the event of trou ble between Russia and Japan, the Asiatic squadron under Ad miral Evans should be divided and ordered to each of the “treaty xjorts. ” This decision of our naval board of strategy tired the hearts of all our old salts who gather at the Army and Navy Club, and they were anxious for a scrap with anyone. A young clerk f t the navy department, however, has upset the plans of these warriors in buckram by Maryland In doubt but all indications are for democratic success. Nebraska Phenomenal gains for democ racy throughout the state. New Jersey The legislature is divided. All the news available up to the hour of going to pres, from the states which voted on Tuesday, indicates that democracy is again coming into possession of her own. The strong republican states, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Iowa will still remain in the republi can ranks by about their usual majorities. Democratic states like Mississippi are still demo cratic, but the doubtful states ap pear to have all dropped into the democratic fold. The influenct this will have on Roosevelt’s chances for 1904 is immense.
