A\'e notice that every cent of last year’s taxes have been collected by onr elticient tax collector, J. A. Ilrvson, 1 with one excei)tion, an<i that one is insolvent. This is a condition that ' has never i*xistt‘tl luae before, as our taxes have always dragged over tor j several months after the fiscal vear i had expired. Then 1 be general con dition of the town bas improved— there has been less rowdyism, less <lrunkemn'ss than for yi*ars past, and the deterent effect of a ^ood w id(* j awake otiicer is clearly felt. It is | impossil)le, however, l\)r any one to; <levect and tind out all the crimes' that are being commitled unless the; law-abidinj; citizcMis assist him; and I sometimes men arc; heard condemn- j ing an otiicer for not st(»pping a cer- j tain nuisance, then when those mak- i ing the comi)laint refuse to give the: otiicer information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of tiiej guilty parlies, it is an otticer's duty to ferret out all crimes and to prose- i <;ute all otVenders. but it is ahothel duty of good citizens t<> assist in up- ■ holding the law and to aid the peace ! otftcers ill every ])ossibl(^ manner. | In one moie year’s work like thi*l past we pre<-lict that llrevanl will be the banner town in the state for full 1 nad prompt tax collection and also for l)eing a pcacable an.l law-abiding town. The sin<^le taxers think it would be equitable and just that such a residence as this should be en tirely untaxed! Y. M. C. A. Excursion. On last Friday the Asheville V. M. C. A. ran an excursion from Ashe- (VilJe to Lake Toxaway and about 450 persons accompanied them. We have nev^er seen any excursion that had a niei.*r class of people than this one. It was a representative gather ing of Asheville’s best citizen’s, and they were delighted with the trip. The lake was a revelation to most of them, as they had no idea thiit there was .sueli a body of water within easy reach of Asheville. The day was a typical Transylva nia day—fair, clear and cool, with just enough breeze blowing to give the waters of theLakea »»entle swell. Not oidy was the crowd an excej)- tionally good one, but the refresli- ments were w’ay above th<* average excursion grade; in fact it was the Dest excursion ever seen here, and the i»lace was in fit k<*epin^- with the people. There is no more oleasant and en tertaining spot in Western North Carolina to have an e.vcursion than to Lake Toxaway. It is the only place wtiere one can get the happy combination of mountain and water, and the Lake, with its many boats and lauiM'hes, ofl'ers a never-tiring source of annisement and pleasure lo the excursionist. The Toxaway Company hatlspared no trouble to make the visitors com fortable. A beautiful site overlook ing the Lake had been built and boys furnished to supply the crowd with fresh sjjring water t'rom a nearby sprinj*:. The excursion was a complete suc cess, and no accident or confusion of any kind arose <luring the entire trip to mar or spoil the pleasure, and we heard many express themselves as thinking it was the t>est excursion ever run out of Asheville in every respect. 300 Square Feet' two coats to the gallon, that’s what The Sherwin-Wiluams Paint will cover.
