Mr. and Mrs. Ralph L. Payne, Mrs. Fredrick Suley and Miss Eliz abeth Payne of Jacksonville Fla. are among the new arrivals at the Athenoikon. Mr. and Mrs. Percy C. Stickney and Miss Ruth Stickney of Jackson ville Fla. arrived at the Athenoikon Saturday from Hotel Grates at Hen dersonville N. C. Prof. C. M. Gallamore will leave to-day (Friday) for Whittier, where he will open school next 3Ionday. We are sorry to lose Prof. Gallamore from the county, where services such as his are so badly needad. Thursday afternoon of last week the Ladies Betterment association had an apron sale at Mrs R. S. Ful« ler’s. There were 54 aprons dis posed of. Refreshments as a side linft helped to swell the receipts, which amounted to $16.00. Vernon Gallamore, at present at work in Spaftanburg in tbe clothing store of Foiling and Ask- in, was home on a visit last Sxmday. He was accomi»nicd by his cousin, C. B. Osborne of Spar tanburg, and B. Hawkins of the same place. E.'A. Allison recently cut a crop of red clover which was so high that, out of curiosity, he picked up a handful and measuii^d it. The length was six feet two inches. This was grown on land that had been brought up from a poor con dition to Very fertile soil. Durward Bracken has accepted a position at lake Toxaway as bill- pf-fare pi;inter for the season We shallrmiss him, of sourse, but hope that he will have a pleasant and profitable time at the Lake. His place at this ofiOce is being supplied by his brother, James Bracken, who was at work here a year ago. There will be a Sunday school picnic and reunion at Connestee Falls on Saturday before the sec ond Sunday in August. Glady Branch, Carson’s Creek, Bunn’s Creek and Cedar Mountain will plea^ join m with Carr’s Hill, bringing well filled baskets. - Im portant questions concerning the Stmday school will be discussed on this day. In addition to a bas ket diioiner refreshments will be serve 1 on the grounds. All are cordially invited* ( David Brooks of Kossee, Texas, is visiting in this county and communi ty. Mr. Brooks is a former resident of this county, a cousin of Dr. Whit and L. W. Brooks, and has a host of friends and acquaintances. 31iss Margaret Welch of Charlotte, recently elected assistani teacher in th6'Davidson River school, arrived last Tuesday, Miss Welch was one of the county teachers last year, her work beinc: at Island Ford. Miss Cora Wilson has accepted the position of teacher in the Dunns Creek school, where she taught ac ceptably last year. Miss Wilson and her mother will move from Brevard and live in the school district. A preliminary survey from Canton to Brevard of the railroad route was recently made by Engineer Seaver. The line follows the Boilston road out of Transylvania county and goes on through the >3ills River section. Rev. and Mrs. Chalmers Durand Chapman announce the enagement of their daughter, Jessie, to Mr. David Gregg Ward, the wedding to occur early in September, at St. Philips Episcopal Church, Brevard. The August issue of W^oman’s Home Companion is the much hearlded *‘Good Time Number,” devoted to midsummer enjoymeilt, indoors and out. The regular de partments and fiction are all full of the good time idea. Tlie firm of Whitmire and Ham ilton at Cherryfield has been dis solved, and the business will now be conducted under the name of J. C. Whitmire. Mr Whitmire expects, as ever to do a big business, and will be engaged in both wholesale and retail merchandizing. All day singing at Laurel Grove Stioday School on King’s Creek next Sunday, July 31, from 10 to 12 and from 2 to 4. Sunday school at 4 p. m. Not only the old songs by the old method, but some of the old songs by the latest method, will be sang. Let everybody come, bring your Christian Harmony and full baskets and have a good time. Monday was the first Dog-day, according to the ancient traditions of our forefathers: Twenty-fifth of July Weather wet or weath^ dry, and it didn’t rain. The old inhabi tants used to predict that “if it rains the first dog-day it will rain every day for forty days ” Of course we are glad it didn’t rain Monday, as an occasional day with out rain is very welcome. Last Tuesday afternoon during the storm a bolt of electricity dis lodged one of the wires in front of the Southern Stcck & Farming Co.'s store. E. E. Lewis, in Yongue's store, received a good share of the scattered electric force. He was shocked into momentary nnconsciousness and when he came to himsolf was seized with an at tack of nausea.
