THE TI IVIES, rCBLlSltKD KVEI'.Y TlIUKSDAY, UY YOUNG & GRANTHAM. VLM If J TlIUKSDAY. MaY THE POLITICAL 0DTL00K NOW. Since our 1 a.t i-sue tlie Timks has Interviewed some of the' best Allian- - . C ti,:n ....... . . ri . . . 1 W n nmti iti I I'.tlllcll i n il uuntj uii'i .-,mn-wii from various spctions of e cli county, and we find tlieni nearly all still goo 1 old Democrats. Of course there aie n few who are drawn otf by sme of the wayvnrd jioli ieal leadeis. Hut the more conservative men of .the or der s.y they wont adopt the .Si. Lmiis platform. 1 licy sec uic r.ceti n re orin, oul while that K true, they a-..!cnovh-dge that the Mate- a-;d county -overn-! ments under the Democratic admin istration has bjen superior to the dark days of Republicanism. "Gen tlemen yu are riiit. We can't af ford in a time like this to stray off. Don't listen to men who are advocat ing tie stiifc with one another. But think of the old ti.:e adage, "divided we fall, united we stand." While wc know that politicians, of both parties fail t do all they promise. We must consider that tlie Deu.oera's have never, since the war between tl.e States, had complete control of the Slate and National Government. So like our fore-fathers stood by their lis erty. let cs come up on November next as patriots of old. and put Grover Cleveland in the Presidential chair. A Democratic Congress to help him hold it 111 the White House of Washington. Thos, 51. Holt for our Governor, and aDcmocra'ic leg islature to back him with. Then if there is not a revolution in theatFurs of this land for better, we will go with 3'ou for eo.ue prirty. Then and not until ther, will we have the good old ttied and true Democrac, which has mfcdc it as well for us as it is now. ALLIANCE DEMANDS EE VIEWED, Ckstkiivillk, Franklin . county, N. C, April 2Cth. Having been ' ''solicited," (in ac cordance with the views of Col. L. L l'olk in his avowal in your paper of the 19ih i ii st), 1 come to dif-eharge the obliga' ion resting up.-n me to expiess my views, ''frankly and can didly," and adopting his words, say "to my mind, my course is clear and my road of duty plain. I shall pur sue it without regaid to myself, per aonal, political or otherwise," No words could express my sorrow, yea tho deep heartfelt unfeigned Regret, that existing circumstances render it my plain unmistakable duty to diner wan our teaming oiaeiais, ana since 1 .do I propose to give a few reasons therefor. When I was aske 1 to join the Farmers Alliance, I was assured that it would, i.ever interfere with my religious or politieial rights, and when I read in our Constitution our declara'ion of intentions, and saw that all of the principles embodied therein wr.re good, right pure, eqflit ab'e and just, and 'that we resolved to work (or them in a "strictly non partisan spirit; to deve'op a belter sla.e, mentally, moral I3', socially &nd fi iancially," and that the brightest jewels which it garners were trie tear ii iojis iiuLi its imperative com mands were to visit tlie homes wliero lacerated hearts ore bleeding; to as SUaL'e tho SUtftTiiura nf .1 Krut'inr nr n f- - - - v a. a, a, sister, I thought, there was much good to be aneomplhhed and no possible harm therein, I cast my lot with them, and have done what I could for the order aid for tho farmer's in terest. It is true that the Southern farmers met the Western farmers' at. St. Louis in 13S9 and mutually and acrodly pledged themselves 'o stand by each other in tlie great struggle for reform and for justice," and again atOeala; and made demands by which wc agreed to stand, 'vand right lerc 1 want to say that the Demo cratic party engrafted those Ocala le"namV"! 1,1 tue!r 'e platform, and that North V.VvP'ina Democrats, A i: ,,1 m n-liancamen hav5 i iam-cw - stood bv them with vxw lions) until the JSt. LoaU conference jiiet. Is this u;w i 'bid they adopt tU iQea'a demands only I 'aa-,they ,oniy done this there would be no roublo ia the Al liance to-day and none be.0? 4-Ui ncemcn and the Democratic party.) But didn't they leave out the entire piank in regard to tho tsriflf? and didn't they demand ownership in stead of control of the railroads ? If they d d these things, then they are not the .demand' of the Southern a'nd Western farmers passel at Ocala; and if they did not do these things, then the Progressive Farmer has mis led me. Again the St. Louis c-nfcrence pawed a resolution that the govern- men? issue legal Utfider notes and - . t: Lis t .1 : ir pny me union siuuiers tue uiiiLTeiice between the price of depreciated money mid gold, The AVJeinal Economist sajs that ''this resolution was adopted s a matter showing the sentiment of tlie body n '. not as a part of the platform." If I under-sta- d it, ii was either to show what they would do if tliev had the power, or else it was a fraudulent bid (or (he soldiers vote. There is no conceal ing the laot that some of our leaders have endeavored to throw the Al i ance into the Thir l and People's party And every Alliancemen knows Ih s "S a violation of the Alli ance constitution which they have sworn to support. And there i3 no authority in the United States con stitution for the government and none to take tham without p ying for them. If theii you neither regard, the constitution of the United States nor of the Alliance, by what may we ex pect 3'ou to be governed ? I regard the ownership of railroads as im practicable, and if insisted on it will prove a burden to the Alliance. I consider myself pledged to work for a better state, "mentally, morady, socially and financial'," and to do so with equ ty and justice; and I can not under this pledge vote to take the property of any individual or class of citizens of the United States against their wisln s, and at t?e same time involved the government" in a debt of ten or twelve billion dollars, a debt which I fear our children's children nill never sae paid. Nor do I think it equitable or just, or consistent with Alliance principles, to pay the Union soldiers the differ ence between greenbacks and gold, and not pay the men who fed them, clothed them, shod them, armed them, furnished them the medicines to heal their wounds, or the labor that raa le the powder and bn'lets with which they fought, the blankets under which they slept, and many other things too numerous to mention, winding up with the claims of those who furnish ed the transportation. If that was not a sectional resolution I confess I wouldn't know how to wtite one that would be. I am willing to be taxed to pa- all just United States pensions for disabled soldiers, but I will not be willingly blindfolded and led by a party that proposes to pay such claims twent' -seven years after the parties have been paid once in full and legal tender U. S. Treasury notes. If I did, which God forbid; when I, in obedience to one of the mist imperative commands of our Alliance constitution, visited those widows whose "tears are the brightest jewels wc garner," and those South ern homes where lacerated hearts are bleeding, ma:iy of whoe inmates are suffering, crying and almost starving for the necessities of life, and told theai I voted to tax the little they have left for such purposes, do you j think they would feel that I was trying s a brother to assuage their Ruireriugs? Nay, but they would rightly say you are mocking us, and making our miserable condition worse. Now I will not charge any one with dishonesty or impure motives, or question his fidelity, that ma3' dif fer with me. Harsh and angry words but widen the b each, and if wc are brother Democrats in or out of the Alliance, we are but furnishing our commora enemy with weapons to fight us by denouncing each other. You all know it will he ruinous to iyrn the State over to Republicans. Willi all the other attendant eyils. don't you think Mr. Morton with his fifteen millions of N. C. bonds could control a legislator" composed of the party who created tbacl and revlre them and put us in bondage? Let us not jump out of tho frying pan in to the fire. I know not what others uu, uut tins 13 my resolution. To Ti . gu us a uavcuoae ior many 'ears in to the Democratic primaries and the convention, if a delegate. Stand squarely on the Ocala . demands as eidorsed by the Alliance and Dera ocratic part)', and work for them, and dp;orL the nomination of said cod vcntion; tnd thus trill I be acting wy Alliance friends. my Democratic friends, working for the best interest of tay jountiy, with a clear conscience and the approval of my God.
