REPUBLICAN CONVENTION.
22 WJIITE MEN AND 64 NEGROES
IN ATTENDANCE.
The Republican met In conven
tion here in the Court House last
Saturday to select delegates to the
Republican State convention. There
were present 22 whites and 64 nc
groes. The convention was called to
order by Mr. P. T. Massey who call
ed on Mr. J. R, CoaU to preside over
! the convention,
Mr. Coats safd that he was glad
that ths Republican party could meet
once mors In Johnston county, and
although they were few in number;
their principles were right and would
eventually succeed and wished for
the time when they would again have
the power in the State ; the time wou'd
come when their enemies, the Demo
crats, would hare to lick the dust, as it
were, at the feet of the Republicans.
He applied a scriptural passage to
himself and said that where two or
three are gathered together in thy
name, lo. I am wi.h 30U."
The next business was the selec
tion of a secretary. (We suppose the
bosfes had neglected to fill this place
in their caucus.) John Beckwith,
colored, moved that J. W. Byrd. col
ored, be made Secretary, and Free
man Ennis, col, seconded the noniN
nation.
We would that we were able to de
scribe the look on the chairman's
face when this nomination was made.
He looked the crowd of whites over
again and again but he could not see
J. M Byrd. He was one that did
not want a negro sec. etary, He
feigned that he did not hear the
nomination made and sat in the chait
as still and deaf as a mute.. He was
ina quandary. He knew not what to
do. Three or four minutes passed
and the boss. F. T. Massey, whisper
ed to him and he put the question,
and Byrd was elected secretary with
but one distenting voice and that
was W. T. Cox or Bentonsville. He
Voted no. He don't take any negro
secretaries in bis.
A conimltte of four white men
and one negro were appointed to se
lect four delegates and four alternates
to the State convention. They re
ported as follows : delegates, I). W.
Fuller, J. R. Coates, J, B. Dupree,
Rev. W. T. H. Woodard (col); alter
nates John Sanders, Joseph Langs
ton. J, W. Byrd (col.) A, W. Smith
(col),
John Beckwith (col) moved that
the delegates be Instructed to vote
for the putting out of a State ticket,
and made the only speech of the oc
casion, giving very good reasons for
his position.
John Sanders opposed the motion
and said if they wished to aid the
Democratic party to do what John
Beckwith said; the Republicans need
ed help row and their only hope was
to act with the People's party.
P. T. Messey also opposed the mo
tion ; be was in favor of uniting with
the People's party ; they .could not
hope to gain anything by a-' State
ticket they needed some help to
watch the Democrats, and the Peo
ple's party would help them; and he
moved that the delegates be instruct
ed to oppose a State ticket.
No one seconded John Beckwith's
motion and the chair was about to
rule it out because it had not receiv
ed one, finally a negro seconded it
and the chair put the question and it
was voted down. Mr. Massey 's mo
tion was .then put and was carried.
The convention was completely
under the control of the white boss
es and John Beckwith was tee only
negro who would dure to assert his
rights. The negroes could easily
have controlled the convention if
they had stood np and wanted too,
but they sat still and let the minor
ity rule.
The roll of townships was called
an I only 9 answered. Clayton,
Cleveland. Boon Hill, Wilders,
Oneal's and Wilson's Mills were not
represented.
Among the white men were six
office holders. P. T. Massey and H.
M. Barnes Revenue officers; John
Sanders, guagei; Joe Langs ton,
stor-keeper; J. D. Massey and Wm.
Gurley. Pott -master a, Smithfield
Herald.
The negroes of the South are the
biggest cranks in the world. Ask
them who are their best friends, who
gives them work to do, who they live
among, and they will tell 50a the
white Democrats, and yet they walk
rght up to the poles and vote again t
the white peoples interest and wel
fare.
One feature of Montana's mineral
display will be a genuine brick of
gold worVb $130,000,
,'N.C.B. E-ts. THOMAS LOSS
Thos. B. Long is the nominnee of
the People's party on the State tir.k
et foj Auditor. Mr. Long was the
a?ent for the North Carolina Rail
road at Salisbury from August 1868
to October. 1869, a little oyer a
year. He had given a bond in the
sum of 10,000 for the faithful and
honest conduct of the duties pertain
ing to this trust. The Railroad Co.
discovered by and by that their agent
was not making full and complete
returns of the proceeds of the office.
He was dismissed from service, and
an investigation instituted whicn de
veloped the fact that he bad been un
faithful to the employing company
to the tune of several thousand doN
lars.
An action was instituted bv the
company to recover the amount ot
his defalcation. The suit was
brought in this. Alamance, county,
it being the domicile of the company,
and upon trial a verdict was render
ed by a jurj' for the sum of $5 951.94
against the defendant Long in favor
of the plainlitf companjv All the
records of the proceedings, judge
ment and all, are now on file in the
office of the Clerk of the Superior
Court of Alamance county. And the
judgement has not been satisfied to
this day.
Several j'ears ago. when said T.
B. Long began to aspire to political
honors, he went to Col, Thos. M.
Holt, then President of the N. C. R,
R. Co., now Governor of our Com
monwealth, and asked the company's
best terms for the adjustment of the
matter, Col. Holt proposed to remit
all interest and to accept fifty cents
on the dollar as full satisfaction of
judgement. Mr. Long said the pro
position was liberal and satisfactory,
and that be would pay it off. Al
ready, several years have elapsed
and Mr. Long has not paid a penny
of it.
Such is the record of the man for
mer Republican whom the People's
party has nominated for the office of
State Auditor, whose business it is,
briefly stated, to manage the finan
cies of the State, how long would it
be before be would bankrupt the
State ? A defaulter to manage the
fiuancie3 of the State would be a pub
lic disgrace and calamity. The peo-
pie who believe in honest govern
men t and faithful public servants
should see to it that only honest and
capable men are nominated and elect
ed to office. Alamance Gleaner,
Stevenson's Appointments.

our men came home with heads down

While seaiching for relics for the

there is only one other piano like it
in this count, and that is at Mount
Vernon, the home of Washington; it
is needless 1o say that the old piano
will bo sent to Chicago.
The head of the Third party has
pulled oft Dr, Exum, has instructed
the chairman. Mr. Wilson, so says
the Charlotte Observer, not to make
any more appointments for him, that
between the Republicans and Demo

live stock exhibition will open with
a dog show on June 12th, which will
be the greatest ten nel exhibit ever
held. All ei.trics in the cattle and
horse division from the United States

June 15th, 1893. This will prove of
great interest to farmers and all those
who are interested in live stock.
